Back in the early 70's toyota and datsun/nissan had an agreement about who imports what. datsun/Nissan got the sports cars with the 240 and toyota got the jeeps with the fj 40's.   I've personally seen the 3956 engine in 1985 and 1996 nissan patrol in europe. same engine but different carb.   It' like the Land Rover Defender which isn't imported to the US anymore because of all the US DOT crap a car has to have now. iI's simply not cost effective to send them here when they have SUV's(yuck, phooey, ackkkk! can't stand them- leaves a bad taste in my mouth) they can sell to paved road four wheelers for looks.   Good Luck, Frank Bue

You are pretty much right Frank. But I believe the deal between Toyota & Nissan was made in the late 1960's. 1969 being the last year the Patrol was imported to the USA.   The engine you are talking about is actually the P40 which is the 3rd generation of inline six put in a Patrol from 1951-today. While the P40 is very similar to the 60 series Patrol P engine it is not exactly the same. The P40 came out in 1980 with the introduction of the 160/61 series of Patrol, aka MQ/G61's. The reason it lasted into the late 80's & early 90's is because the European Patrol is made in Spain. The Euro Patrol didn't get updated in 1988 to the Y60 (GQ) series like the rest of the world. The Spain plant continued to make the 160 series and I suppose the P40 was one engine available.   The P40 can also be found in forklifts, even here in the USA. It is also a very similar motor to the PPU forklift engine.   The design of the NC, P, P40 & PPU engine dates back to the 1920's. The first generation of Patrol six was the NC series which actually was designed by an American company way back in the 1920/30's. This motor was sold to Nissan Japan who later put it into the Patrol.
