The Jonga Production in India started in the early 80's.A factory was set up to produce the Nissan Jonga ,Nissan 1-ton Carrier truck ,and a Mann truck specifically for the Indian Military use.The factory known as the Vehicle Factory Jabalpur(or VFJ) was entirely owned and run by the government, amd that lead to its downfall. You see, in India , taking up a government job means idling around for the rest of your life and still getting paid for it.So the workers of the the factory never did their work properly and the factory started to run into losses and therefore, the government decided to stop production in 1997.If this would not have happened the Jonga would still had been in production.        The Indian Military has been using a number of 4WheelDrives.Till date it uses the Willys Jeep, the Russian Army Gaz/Uaz,and the Land Rover. The American Hmwve was also evaluated but It turned out that it was too expensive to produce and run(an 4WheelDrive 56 seater Army Truck can be produced for the same cost),was too wide for the Indian roads and therefore would also be difficult to navigate through to dense tropical forests. The Jonga is considered to be the toughest of them all.        The Jonga, even though production stopped in 1997(there is an estimated 15 years lifetime of any military vehicle), is only being supplied to the Armoured and Tank buster Regiments to mount Anti-Tank weapons because it is the only vehicle that can move with the tanks in the desert sand without getting stuck.        You are right that it is a short wheelbase  60 series Patrol but comes with a right hand drive(it still uses the Nissan Patrol tag on the side panel). There was also a civilian version long time ago which had a diesel motor and no 4WheelDrive,but it did not do well and production was soon stopped. The parts ,Sadly are only available to the the Military and that too in a very limited supply because of the number of vehicles in use. After military use the vehicles are scrapped and are bought by junk dealers for as little as $350(although the junk dealers further sell them at a much higher price-about $900),and they, the Junk Dealers, are our only source of parts.............

Spoken like a true authority.   So tell us about this 4spd tranny. Is it a Nissan tranny? What is it compatible with, or what other vehicle was it used in? The answer to that might tell us how available parts might be. Being 3 inches longer, is there a drive shaft that could be used for the SWB Patrol?   And how about those diff lockers? Are the diffs the c222 like the US diffs? Is the locker a bolt-in kit, or is welding required?   Ztraviz1: Yes, the SD33 diesel came in the Patrol, but in the MQ. Entirely different drivetrain than the 60 series. I know someone who put the SD33 with the 4 spd in a 60 series Patrol. It was a G61, so it had the MQ axles but the P motor and 3 spd tranny originally. It required major relocation of the engine and tranny mounts (luckily he had the frame stripped), total redesign of the radiator and some obvious fuel line modifications at minimum. I haven't seen it running yet, but he has all of the resources to get the job done so it should be soon.

z travis   well the t18 is a option its final drive is still at 1.000  and really wont give you much difference in top end since the patrol 3rd is also 1.000 you need a o/d say around .069 to have a hwy patrol second imho it will only compound youre gearing problem becouse the t18 gear sets are slightly worse  now there are some ways to look at it mount a t18 with a american powerplant  and all is done  and fairly cheap. butt in return youre patrol looses value,do to, its no longer a patrol , its something else . watch ebay there is a v8 patrol ,there right now!! it wont get near the amount it should .  most people dont buy a patrol, thats been butcherd by some one else unless its a parts rig . so spending 2k on a marks will bring the value of youre patrol up atleast  2k . not down 2k like all other attempts to reengineer a 40 year old truck . butt heck its all money and if there was a  easy button id be all over it  . ps a few months back i checked into the same option and its not a easy swap  shaft lenght  and so forth makes it almost impossible to mount to a nissan  p motor  good luck

Well I have been holding my tongue for long enough on this one. I actually have a T-18 waiting to go in my Patrol. I also have a Dana (Spicer) 18 T-case to use at the same time. This is the best option for me, and the worst option for some. It really is just another choice we all make in our day to day lives based on our own opinions. There is no right answer. However, for those interested, my plan is this: .75" adapter between Patrol bell housing and T-18. Advance Adapter input shaft (712514 I think) that has 7.75" stick out length in T-18 to accommodate for .75" adapter. Splines on shaft are the same as Nissan Patrol (so I've been told, if it proves to be false, Centerforce clutch disc (383303)to match tranny, stock pressure plate). Likely a custom T.O. bushing or bearing needed, check your local bearing store or have a brass bushing machined. Dana 18 is pass. offset both ends so only drive shaft mod is for length (not much different but some). And of course, I want to put the Saturn overdrive in to achieve better highway comfort.T-18 gears (approx.) Note these are for the granny low version, the 4:1 1st tranny is not compatible with the needed input shaft1st 6:32 (non synchro, but you are surely stopped)2nd 3:1 synchro3rd 1.7:14th 1:1Saturn O.D. .75:1Dana 18 T-case gearshi 1:1low (stock) 2.46:1low (aftermarket) 3.15:1keep it stock or mod it to the gills just do what makes you like to drive your truck

Well, as far as i can tell you,the Truck uses the same Engine(145hp) and Transfer case as the Jonga, and also uses the same Clutch casing. As far as the Jonga goes,it is as original as a right hand Patrol G60 can get. During World War 2 ,the American Army used a Dodge 1 Ton pick-up Truck called M37,and after the war the Japanese copied it.Toyota and Nissan made almost similar trucks to the M37 and it is that same Nissan truck that the Indian Army uses.According to my research, the earliest Nissan Patrols(the ones that looked like Flatfender Jeeps)used a 4 speed transmission(but without a low drive in the Transfer case). The Truck even though it uses a Low drive Transfer case(the same as the Jonga),has the same Transmission gear ratios, and no sychros on the 1st and 2nd gears as the early 4 speed Patrols. It was also first manufactured during the same time so probably it uses the same Transmission      The Truck uses the same Engine and Transfer case as the G60 so it will bolt right up to the Patrol.I measured the Patrol Transmission lenght wise(without the Transfer case)and it read 9 inches whereas the Truck Transmission lenght was 12 inches. The Jonga uses the same full floating front diff. and the semi floatin rear diff. as the G60 had,and sadly there are no diff. locks(does the Patrol even need them???).The Truck uses heavier drive shafts as it uses heavier axles(and 37 inch tires on 18 inch wheels).   The Indian Army never used the 4 speed in the Patrol though, althiugh some time back the Border Scouts were using some sort of a Multi-Fuel Engine with the 3-speeder.I personally wanted to shoe horn a Cummins 6bt to the Patrol but am afraid that it will probably make Mince Meat of the Axles.....

hey im all for finding happiness  here a solution to the madness spicer , made along time ago, a spliter called a brownie box . its a under /overdrive unit  and goes between your existing output shaft and the rear end  all that is needed is a custom tail shaft X2 and a linkage or go with the fairey od unit with a custom 21t bowl gear that could be fabbed fairly cheaply so for under a grand either way you have  hwy gears  the brownie box gives the patrol something like 12.1 crawl  and a .085 od   very sweet for all that is needed plus all 3 gears would have od sort of like haveing a six speed    just some food for thought

Theres something i forgot to mention.The 4 speed Transmission has a small opening on the left side just like the 3 speed Patrol Transmission for the P.T.O box and also does come with a P.T.O which drives a 4.5 ton(approx. 10,000lbs)winch.

I sent an email to Marks enquiring about the 5 speed tranny and this was their reply   G'Day Travis, Thank you for your email & interest in our products. The transmission you refer to has not been produced for over 10years. As  you can appreciate it is not cost effective to produce a transmission on a one off basis. The casing of the transmission was manufactured by us which entailed a lot of machining etc. To give you an indication of cost...,.the last batch of transmissions we manufactured retailed for A$2750.00 each. We also used internals from a Nissan truck which these days are very hard to source as these vehicles are now 25-30 years old, thus making supply rather difficult.  Unfortunatley the demand is not there to warrant re-designing the transmission. I hope you understand our situation Please don't hesitate to contact me if you require any further information Kind Regards Denny
