Re: Engine Choices...
The seats are still there also and the gas tank. but it is no longer loaded up. You did well getting the Dream Garage one that is next in line after the RR one as far as Patrol collector item.

Do you know what diesel they tried to use?RiverPatrol wrote:There isn't a pat answer for the question. Several Patrols have been modified with various engines, with varying degrees of success. There was one not too long ago that did a diesel. He was so disappointed with it he immediately put it up for sale. It has shown up for sale a few times since he sold it. He did a really great job on paint and body, but the engine and trans not so much.
I have wondered whether or not an SD33T out of a 80 International Scout would work? Being a Nissan engine, would it fit the G60 motor mounts? Would it bolt up to the tranny? Or would it be better to use the entire running gear out of the Scout?

It helps to know there is some sort of sense in the madness.

I was just wondering if keeping track of know junked ones, would one day help if the RR patrol vin# would ever become available than we might have a clue by dead Patrol #s

It was the SD33, but not the T.mdawg4x4 wrote:Do you know what diesel they tried to use?RiverPatrol wrote:There isn't a pat answer for the question. Re: Engine Choices...
I have had the idea for a while and would really like to do it someday. The idea is a 5 cyl turbo diesel off an early 80's Mercedes 300d. From what I've researched they have similar power as the P engine but I think it would get about 24 miles to the gallon. They are super cheap and bulletproof too.

Re: Engine Choices...
The 292 has a lot more torque and horse power than the 235. The reason it's easier to install the 235 into the patrol is: the 235 has a metal plate bolted to the rear of it that can be unbolted. This is the plate that attaches the engine to the transmission. So you can fabricate a new plate for the 235 so it will attach to the patrol bell housing. Now the 292 that i prefer is not as easy to install into the patrol. It doesn't have the metal plate on the rear that can unbolt, it has a bell housing flange cast into the block that cannot be removed so its a bit harder to bolt it to the patrol bell housing.faux40 wrote:I kind of like the Chevy 292 option that 2869ral suggested -- just to reveal my Chevy ignorance... is the 292 physically larger or substantially different from the 235?
Ideally, I'd prefer a Nissan engine so the P40 bosque suggested would be a top choice... but the few I've seen for sale are pricey. I'd rather spend my initial time and effort on the body and frame as changing engines later shouldn't be too tough. A Diesel could be fun, but RiverPatrol is probably right that it wouldn't be a great choice... perhaps gutless to a fault is the right way to describe it!
Anyway, thanks so much for the input... I have much Patrol to learn!

Re: Engine Choices...
Family Patrol Update -- Since I ended up with three more Patrols since my original post, I'm now the proud owner of THREE P engines! We've started pulling the engines out and will be doing a minor rebuild on two of them for our two '67s.
I've received a couple of questions about the Chevy V8 and its motor mounts. I think it causes too much damage to the firewall. Man, they hacked it up big time! I'd be game to keep the V8 if they'd done a nice job, but... Yuck!
Take a look at that gaping hole! It's just as bad on the other side!

However, the motor mounts are pretty cool. It's a one-piece mount that swoops down under the harmonic balancer bolts to the front on both sides.

Not being familliar with Chevy bell housings, I have no idea where this came from... Perhaps someone will chime in here? The bell housing has a shaft for the transfer case levers and some sort of bolt-on, possibly for the E-Brake?

It's likely to be a few months before I take a wrench to the '67 soft top (We want to get the orange '67 running ASAP!), but I'll post close ups of the bell housing and front mount (unless someone want's to help out a bit...
Thanks!
