Your shoes look oriented correctly to me ... :think: The square hole always goes at the top near the hydraulic cylinder...

Having never performed any brake jobs before this may be a dumb question, sorry in advance. Thank you for the help.
The shoes and springs are correct in the picture. In my phone can't see clearly about the friction material length on each shoe but everything looks ok.

Thank you all for your help. One last question. The notch or cut out on the shoe itself are both facing in the down position in Esteban's pic, where as mine one is on top and one is on bottom. Again, not sure if this make any difference. Thank you again, this site is saving my life. :D

My shoes are marked fore and after with factory looking markings and they are oriented like the latter photo, not like Estaban's. They also have part numbers 3312 for AFTER and 3322 for FORE. For the sake of too much information the shoe linings are marked NBK DON242-FF on both.

Very interesting information! Always thought the shoes were the same!! :shock: :shock: but after reading your post I checked some parts manuals and in fact there are different numbers for each shoe:

A 1962 puts different part numbers for the brake shoes like this:
44060-35000 Ass'y-Shoe, rear brake, fore -----------> Qty. 1
44061-35000 Ass'y-Shoe, rear brake, after ----------> Qty. 1

The 1965 USA Parts Book, almost the same with only slightly revised part numbers
44060-35004 Ass'y-Shoe, rear brake, fore -----------> Qty. 1
44061-35004 Ass'y-Shoe, rear brake, after ----------> Qty. 1

And the 1973 Parts Book, another slight revision on the part numbers,
44060-35005 Ass'y-Shoe, rear brake, fore -----------> Qty. 1
44061-35005 Ass'y-Shoe, rear brake, after ----------> Qty. 1

Maybe what changes is the position of the friction material on each shoe, being it fore or after.

Please post a picture if you can. I have relined so many times mines that I don't have a reference any more.

Plateaucal, please take a look at the following scanned image of the rear brakes, taken from the 1962 Parts Manual. I've highlighted the friction material.
Rear Brake Shoes 1962.jpg
If you compare the above graphic to the image posted by BGA they are very similar, if not exact (take into account that each correspond to different side, so if you reverse the graphic, it matches)

What I recall from years ago, is that I bought the rear brake pads on a sale that the local dealer in Ecuador was having. Maybe it was on sale since all were the same and didn't have the matching pair :evil: .

What worries me a little bit is the length of the friction material. What effect might that have? At least everything is symmetric on mine.

NOTE: I have added a caution note on the opening post since my shoes assembly is incorrect. Please refer to BJA picture that is right!

Thanks for all of the great pics.......I'm new to the forum and just last week my best friend gave me his Patrol!!!! My question is this: Are there two brake pistons on the front wheels and only one brake piston (cylinder) on the rear?

I think that is the scenario, but after looking at the picture it looks like the rears also have 2 brake cylinders? On my Patrol the front passenger wheel spins freely, and then grinds a bit half way around. I wonder if I need to adjust both cylinders in the front.....assuming there are two brake adjusters on the front as well. Is this true? Thank you for your help in advance.

There are two wheel cylinders on each front wheel and one on each rear wheel. There are also two adjusters on each front wheel and one adjuster on each rear wheel.

Here is a good thread on brake adjustment: https://www.60patrol.com/forum/viewtopi ... ent#p54803

Thanks again for helping me out. I thought that was the case with two wheel cylinders up front and on in the rear. But, since I don't know a lot about the Patrol Yet, I think it's great to just have the verifications from the elite Patrol Master builders....thanks, dmo

Hi Esteban,

Thank you for your pics, etc. On my 67, the rear wheel was so tight I couldn't turn it by hand. On the very bottom of the passenger side wheel, on the inside of the wheel there is a bolt, and I backed the bolt off a couple turns and then the wheel would spring freely. But that is not the star adjuster. and in fact, the only rubber boot on the 67 is at the very top of the wheel. Am I adjusting the correct way?
