That is correct- most engines run with their best fuel efficiency, right at the peak torque RPM. So, like Esteban says: keep your Patrol right around 2000RPM while cruising, and you will maximize your fuel economy...

I've always understood that the engine produces the most efficient power at the max torque point on the chart... But according to the P Engine service manual, it's optimum fuel consumption occurs at a slightly lower engine speed -- 1,600 RPM (the lower line on the chart):

But you said it yourself (somewhere in that voluminous, "moore_rb" style epic post of yours ) - Peak torque is the point where the vehicle is MOST capable of fighting the forces of wind resistance -

remember torque is the application of force- and so pitting torque against wind is force against force.

horsepower totally sucks at fighting against the force of the wind.

But, may I direct your attention to the text at the top of the chart... it states that the Min. Fuel Consumption is 220 gr/HP.h @ 1600 r.p.m.

However, in reality, that line appears essentially flat from 1,400 to 2,200 rpm so I imagine that the difference is trivial.

AHHHHH, but your error is that you assume that I actually READ anything, which is hardly ever the case when there are pictures...

Great, thanks for that info. By the way, the question on engine breaking was more about knowing how the engine works. We would always use the compression breaking (learned something new ) when going downhill.

I did the rough math on mine awhile ago.
I get about 8 mpg.
33-35 litres to 100km.
travelling at around 90-100km an hour,56-62mph.

That is VERY depressing news to start out my day with...

Some things (like a NIssan Patrol's fuel consumption rate) are probably better left unknown...

The 292 chevy in mine is worse than that! Im going to rebuild the original engine and stuff it back in. I cant wait to get 8MPG.

I'm always keepig tabs of the mpg of my cars. Every single fueling goes into record.

I consistently get 13 mpg. When only driving in highways at 55 to 65 mph I have made 14.5 mpg.

Send me the tickets and I will tune up yours.

Mine is more like Esteban's, though I've yet to drive more than 60 miles on one trip. Mostly driving lots of 15 to 20 mile trips at about 50-55 mph.
I've been averaging around 13 mpg also. One time a coupla months ago, when my odometer began registering at about 5/8 of actual distance traveled, (worn nylon worm-gear in the speedo head) I began looking for fuel leaks and neighbor kids with a siphon hose.
Now it's downhill, with a tailwind everywhere I go.
