That is good to know....what are things I can and should do as I move forward? Spark plugs, wires, new gas, rebuild the carb and distributor.... These are on my list already, is there anything else I should be looking at ....in a very broad stroke sort of way?

Right now Chad and I are cleaning the engine and removing decades of gunk. One of the lessons I am trying to instill in my son is that a significant portion of time spent in order to be a good mechanic is actually spent CLEANING! It gives you time to think about each part as you clean it. It is also a lot easier to work on a clean engine than a dirty one. We are using a few of the tricks we use on our mt bikes and motorcycles. A really great product is the "Brush X". This is a stiff brush that attaches to a hose. I have a hot water spigot outside which makes it even better. Another thing I learned from guys that restore old rusty chrome BMX bikes is Oxalic acid to remove rust. Oxalic Acid is typically sold as a wood bleach but is nothing short of a miracle for removing rust from metal. The best part is you just soak the rusty item in a mixture of water and oxalic acid and 24-48 hours later the rust is gone! Apparently Oxalic Acid breaks the molecular bond that is holding the rust on the metal. I have used it for years on old motorcycles and it is amazing.
Brush X for cleaning....
https://brush-x.publishpath.com/brush-x ----sold to mt bikers but has worked great on the engine.
Oxalic Acid ----breaks the molecular bond of rust. Does not damage the metal or chrome. I buy mine in 5 lbs bags from Amazon. It is cheap.
You all probably use oxalic acid already but if you don't.....give it a try....you will not be disappointed.
