Can you believe I negotiated that switchback in a full-size 72 Chevy Blazer back in 1991...?

Harrowing, to say the least, but once you are there, there is no other option.

Our plan was for a full shake down patrol for Presidio Patrol but delays are going to preclude its use. However, we will be in Breckenridge for a week, then Santa Fe for a couple of days for a balloon ride, then a week in Lake City, CO. So, yes, we will probably rent some jeeps along the way.

If the manufacturers are to be believed we could drive our daily drivers. Both German, both full time 4WD with all kinds of computer aided traction control, which absolutely works btw, but tires and ground clearance totally preclude either from ever feeling dirt between their treads, plus my manufacture actually warns against changing the tire! Their advice is to not, even try. They advise to just pullover and call a service provider. I kid you not, now their showroom shows one decked out with a roof rack, Hella overhead night rally lights and BFGs. Well I guess you could carry a real spare tire in the overhead rack.

Bummer on taking the Patrol. We actually hit skid plates, frame rails, and front crossmember with the PRO4X Xterra several times. It is running stock size BFG ATs, while the 2012 has a small lift and oversized BFG ATs.

WOW Mike! That's awesome, thanks for sharing. I also love Durango. Thats one of my favorite vacations. I like the narrow gauge train to Silverton. We will be vacationing there next summer, can't wait.

We took the train last year and loved it. My wife saw an on the mountainside right before Silverton. My daughter spun around and snapped a picture but nobody else saw it. The tour guide on our car came back by and asked to see the picture. At first they thought it was a big mountain goat, but upon zooming in, determined it was a big black bear. The tour guide said she had never seen one in all her trips on the train. Then we saw a moose just out of Silverton in the river flat on the way home.

I don't know how they turn the big off road tour truck around on the switchbacks. I think it was based on an old Jeep J10 platform with a deck built on the back.


We will return. I would take my Jeep, but it is a bit far to go mileage wise, and I don't have a truck and trailer to pull it. I am, however getting ready to trade my Frontier in on a new Jeep Rubicon Unlimited to drive back out there next trip.
