The front axle seems to be the proper one from the Patrol, but I don't know about the rear one. Overall it looks like they did a good job!!

Oso is back from the mechanic with everything working except the speedo! Lights - check. Wipers - check. Drives and turns 100% better than two weeks ago - check, check, check. All new fuse block and wiring - check. The V8 really makes it move -- ordering shocks from Amazon and new springs from Alcan next. Thinking 235/75r15 BFG MTs for the tires on new steel rims. Then recovering seats in a tan marine vinyl and having a new soft top made here or in Colombia.

As I attempt to digest this entire site, I came across this old thread about Oso before it found me:

So I guess it was from Brazil, not Colombia and the 4WD hasn't worked for a while. Any lingering questions from 2014 I can answer?

Springs from Alcan are in as are the shackles Ron made up -- work in earnest can start! I am replacing both front and rear axles with donors from a Jeep Cherokee, providing 4 wheel drive again and front disc brakes. The transfer case is being swapped as well. New shocks, exhaust, battery relocated to engine compartment, wheels and tires will get us on the road by Christmas. On the topside, new "old" steering wheel won off ebay, newly recovered seats, new gauges (Speedhut), new LED headlights, new door hinge from Bill, new window felt will make sure we are driving in style.

Special props to Alberto and the fine folks at Citroa -- we had a miscommunication about floorpans and they are making it right. Excellent customer service!

Old axles and sway bars ripped out (to go to Justin and Bill at some point) - new axles and leaf springs on tomorrow. More pics then. NB - PO sprayed entire bottom with some rubberized liner material that I feared was hiding much rust but fortunately it appears to have done its job - very solid underneath!

More pics of my Franken-Patrol Oso - should be home Friday just in time for Christmas! The weather here is supposed to be mild so I will get a chance to drive her around - yay! Seats are being recovered in tan marine vinyl - lighter for the outside and a darker tan for the middle and piping. Wheels will be 16 inch steelies wearing 235/85r16 Goodyear Duratracs (I have them on my F150 and like them a lot - pleasant on the road and decent in the mud of the deer lease). Just waiting on exhaust, drive shafts and a few other details.

In the Spring, once this set of bills are paid, I will get a soft top made (I will just cover her for now) and install the Citroa supplied passenger side floor (only severe rust damage) then paint. Speedhut gauges are also on the way.

My 1970 Patrol is home from the shop and I am thoroughly enjoying it. The progress has been slow but steady but she is very road worthy and gets lots of attention wherever we go.

Work performed has been detailed previously. I realize that there is much preference for all original, stock vehicles here but since Oso was already swapped out, my focus has been on driveability, durability and aesthetics.

An update from Austin: Oso has been back in the shop quite a bit as I had to end up replacing the original radiator and water pump (and all new hoses, overflow bottle, etc) to address overheating issues then another trip to deal with fuel delivery issues (ended up with heat insulating gasket between carb and intake manifold, sleeve on fuel line in engine compartment, new electric fuel pump). The problems were two fold - fuel percolation in the line plus a plugged fuel tank vent causing a vacuum there.

While in the shop, I added one of the two leaves removed from the back spring packs back in so that I could carry passengers in back without rubbing issues and that has done the job and the ride is still great. I added a Smittybilt i-Rack on the spare tire carrier to hold my Hi-Lift, jerry can and antique West German Army shovel in a Quickfist - mount is rock solid and the carrier is handling the larger tire (235/85r16 Goodyear Duratrac) and rack without complaints. I also added an ill fitting bikini top from Bestop that will suffice until I get a full soft top made (more $$$).

While driving in the neighborhood, a woman who lives not 1/2 mile away stopped me and let me know she and her husband owned Oso 8 years ago and sold it to the person I bought it from. We met for beers and I got a more complete picture of its prior lives, including a story about how it was found in the jungles of South America with a tree growing up through the empty engine compartment and then brought to Houston and restored in the early '90's. Prior owner has a picture of it in this state and is looking for it - if found, I will absolutely post it. It made the rounds through some of the video game development community here in Austin and the 350 was used and abused doing some racing . . . oh my!
