Been a while since I posted anything on this vehicle. Been working on it slowly. The top was the final component that I was going to finish up with....... so here are the pics and the story that goes with the tail of woe...... Paint removal began and finished on the top with no unusual events. after painting the primer on the top, the plan was to weld up 8 small holes that had been drilled to attach a car top carrier. 4 small holes on each corner. All started just fine. Pulled the head liner away from where I was welding to keep from burning holes into it. Factory head liners are nearly impossible to find... So I welded up 2 holes and was moving to the next corner when i noticed smoke rolling out from under the top.... oh no! i can deal with this... looked under to see a small (about 2 inch wide flame) of which I quickly attempted to put out with a wet rag... that didn't put it out and when i turned to grab the fire extinguisher several feet away the fire burst out of control rolling flames and black smoke out from under the top.... At this point survival instincts took over and as I ran to the door, I grabber my respirator..... opened the garage door to allow the black nasty choking smoke to roll out... went back in with respirator and turned the shop ventilation off to save the filter.. ha.ha.. ha on that... but did get it shut off... then I just sat back and watched the headliner burn itself out..... so now lets get back to the story.... clean up began.... found a soft wire wheel worked better than the chemicals to clean the black smoke residue off the surfaces.. decided to take the sides of the top off and had to buy replacement window rubbers Have started with painting the first side piece and installing the side window rubber and window. And here is the current state of the vehicle.... In looking at the events, I determined that when I pulled the head liner back to weld up the holes, it left a layer of glue and foam remnants that quickly exploded into uncontrollable fire.. I had a small remnant that didn't burn and I lit it on fire to see what it did... nearly explosive.... hmmm. So a word to all.. be careful when dealing with flame around the stock head liners....

And yes I did change the color of the interior on the top to gray to better match the earlier year that this vehicle is. the top is off a 69 and the vehicle is a 66...

Sorry to hear about the mishap, it looks awesome though. Probably best to replace that headliner anyway with all the work you're doing, it might have been crumbling and falling down soon anyway.

It was starting to fall. Guess it wanted to be replaced...

So after the little barbeque that I had with the top, I was able to recover and finish it up for the most part. . Hopefully the pictures are explanation enough. Enjoy the pictures. By the way, the measurements provided in the write up by Riverpatrol on installing a new head liner work awesome! Next on this project is to get the brakes working correctly again. front brake on passenger side is not working and leaking fluid....
