60Patrol

The project is moving along despite the "social distancing" protocol.... just me and my truck! 55+years of grime has been removed from the engine and transmission. Next steps are to 1. disconnect the transmission from the engine 2. deliver the engine to the machinist 3. disassemble the body and take everything down to the frame... should be a busy weekend but I couldnt be happier!

They do make for good solo projects. Good work.

Despite the Covid craziness, a friend offered to help me for a few hours yesterday do I was able to make some good headway in the disassembly process. Fortunately, I haven't uncovered any significant rust or major structural issues. However, I did discover that one of the lower shock mounts on the rear axle is snapped. See pic below. I looks like this piece would be fairly simple to fabricate, however replacement would be easier. Does anyone have an extra or know where I might be able to procure one? Thanks again, Poinrobe

I'm almost sure that I have one in a spare rear axle that I bought a couple of years ago (it shows in the pictures ) It's in a friends shed, and there might be some weeks before I can go there due to the ongoing quarantine.

Years ago I modified all the lower bases for the shocks so I have no use for it. If you can wait a little bit, I'll be more than happy to send it to you.

Project update: Things are progressing nicely.
-the engine has been delivered to the machinist
-Gas tank is being cleaned and relined
- a small crack in the radiator is being repaired.

As the pix below show, the truck has been taken down to the frame , except for the firewall. Fortunately, the frame appears to be in good shape without any structurally significant rust. Yesterday, I removed the rear axle for cleaning, maintanance and painting. While it is out of the frame, i will be painting the rear half of the frame with POR15. After these tasks have been completed, the axle will be reinstalled and the process repeated in the front.

I have a few q's for my fellow Patrollers:
1. 1 out 4 engine mounts has come apart. (see picture below) Fortunately the other 3 mounts are in relatively good shape. Do you think this mount can be repaired? If not can these mounts be professionally repaired or reproduced?
2. I was unable to remove the windshield without destroying the rubber gasket. Does anyone have specific recommendations for replacement of the gasket?

1. The engine mounts can be repaired. On a MK Patrol, years ago, I had two of the mounts repaired since at that moment there were no spares available (back in Ecuador) and the shape of those was a little more complicated than the ones on the P engine of yours. The good thing about the P engine is that it is naturally balanced, so no need to absorb unusual vibrations like in other cars. Hope you can find a local source in your area to fix them.

2. For the windshield I have in my notes the following rubber profile, used by another member. Can't recall the thread.

I'm pretty sure I saw engine mounts for sale on ebaymotors.

You can get engine mounts on Ebay from 4WD Parts out of Australia, and the windshield rubber out of Columbia.

You can also use a Toyota FJ40 windshield rubber profile, but you need an extra 12 inches longer than an FJ40.
