The attached picture is of the Deestone bias ply tires he referenced.

I may actually wash the sleigh today.

The narrow Freestone tire keeps mud burgers within the wheel wells and they are easier to turn. I'm pretty sure Rob, or someone from here, pointed me to these months ago.

BFG ATs - True all dat . Not so good for M/S, great for roads and off roading in rocks and thorns. Before I took them off the white truck they got me through some incredibly long bogs in winter and up limestone hills TV worthy. They can't be discounted for general purpose.

As Plateaucal more precisely pointed out, they are E rated. I'm pretty sure that stand for " go Everywhere".

Considering that I blew 1600 bucks on tires I don't really like, I would say no one is a greater fool than me. I took a shot and lost. The truth is tires ain't cheap and more info. is better than less.

This really comes down to application. I used to run BFG's when I lived in AZ. No problems. When I move to Colorado I found out they were pretty worthless in snow and wet. Truly not that good in situations we see here. So I went through a long term exercise to find the right tire. Fortunately I had a large heavy truck that loved to eat tires every 20k-30k miles regardless of mileage rating. The criteria were: longevity, snow traction and durability off road, and behavior suitable for a daily driver. There is no tire that meets those criteria and also does good in the mud. So I don't go in the mud. I've been through Cooper, Toyo, BFG (commercial), Yokohama, Kelly, Bridgestone, Michelin and several others on a range of multi-purpose vehicles over the last 40 years including LandRover, Landcruiser, Jeeps (many), Ford trucks, Diesel trucks etc. Yah, its been a bad habit; I love machines. I have learned a little along the way.

Michelin makes a good tire (LTX), long life, not real beefy and they suck in the snow. Nothing good comes from Firestone or Bridgestone. The rubber compound is too hard for snow use and they chip up pretty bad on rocks. The Firestone AT's that came on my Ram were about shot by 10,000 miles (seriously, it's a thing with these particular tires). Yokohama typically meets a good price point and their tires work well in our conditions. Kelly's were good but not long lasting. Coopers and Toyo's did not last (about 20k miles).

I purchased Hercules tires from my Patrol for the most important reason; they look cool and were affordable.

In all this time I have finally found my favorite tire. It's Hankook. It meets all of my criteria, but unfortunately their size selection is limited. So I bought some big ass Yokohama MT's for my Ram. Worst tire purchase ever, but I knew it was a risk going in. But I carry a large camper off road so it seemed like a nice beefy tire for the purpose. Not so good on a 12 hour trip to Yellowstone, though. Damn noisy things,lousy in the snow (like most MT's) and they wear like butter. They should be restricted to predominantly off road use. But! They look really cool.



I will be perpetually on the quest for the perfect tire, so any feedback is useful.

So here they are. They just clear the bumperette on the spare tire mount. And they are quiet. They rate well on line. Hercules Trail Digger, LT-235-85x16

Someday I will take you on a ride in one of my real off-road machines. You will be a convert. BTW, That's the driveway. Funny you mention it though, I just pressure washed the shop floor that is why my wittle baby is sitting in the driveway. Gotta tuck her back into that cozy spot in the shop. I am afraid with that white paint she might get a sunburn.

We were gonna head out today into Escalante Canyon to a secret place only a few Colorado people know about. But I am at home babysitting instead. Thus my flurry of posts.
