The rochester is on and the Patrol idles perfect...butdrives like crap. Does not make sense. I timed it again with ports plugged.....before I took the vac line off the carb, I felt obvious suction from the vac line again.....with a different carb!??? I'm so burnt out now.

Bosque 67 Patrol

Are you setting the timing with a lamp? I have the feeling that your timing is way to advanced. Whatever you do, do it only on one system at a time. I'm going to read again the problems you're facing.

In the VH42 carb there's only one vacuum port where the pipe with the threaded connection goes so no mysteries there.

Everything that we have checked so far has checked good other than the vacuum at the advance when at idle and the loose advance plate in the dizzy. The vacuum needs taken care of, but wont cause the vehicle to run this badly. I definitely think we need to focus on the loose advance plate in the dizzy. At this point. :)

I set it with a lamp. The Hitachi VC-42 is in a box for another time. Rochester idles good, revs, but under power, not a good drive. The fact that I have vac at idle from both carbs is odd but not necessarily connected. The symptoms are so much in the timing....it must be. I would think that the pertronix module would just not work if going or gone bad but how to test? I have always had instantly fowled plugs with black dry which says running rich, right?.
I will do another vid clip tomorrow...maybe get it now....

carb held open at 2000 rpm....revs....idle after revving.

Viewing the video again, it shouldnt be that loose, but it doesnt look bad enough to cause too many problems. If you have another dizzy, maybe stab it in and try. We have checked about everthing else.

The play in the distributor shaft looks pretty normal. The play in the advance plate does not.

However, in my experience, whenever driveability issues are due to mis-timing or other ignition issues, the vehicle often runs much rougher than yours is- your engine sounds really smooth.

One more timing test for you to try. This test will indicate whether or not your centrifugal advance system is working correctly.

set up your timing light, disconnect the vacuum advance line and plug the vacuum port. Then start the engine, hit the crankshaft timing mark with the light, and hold the light on it while you rev the engine up - you should see the timing mark start at the 10 degreee mark, and advance (move down) as the revs increase, and when you hold a sustained higher PRM, the mark should stay down in this advance area. When you release the throttle, the timing mark should steadily move back up to the 10 degreee initial mark

If the timing mark does not steadily advance off the 10 degree mark as you add throttle, and then move back to 10 degrees when you reduce throttle, then your dizzy's internal advance system is probably the root of all your problems...

Thanks all for helping me.
The engine does sound good but not quite right. I guess it is timing so even though I told Ron I had another diz, it needs blasting and rebuild. I just cleaned plugs, blocked carb vac port, warm it up, ran through Robs test and the timing mark does move to and fro. Idels awesome...can't get out of the driveway.
This leaves me to think about the pertronix system since we cannot test it.??? :x

I hate to toss out this idea, but what about cam timing? If the gear was off one-tooth, the engine sure wouldn't perform well. Thoughts? Is there a way to check this easily?

Just a thought...
