grade 3 or grade 5 - they only get something like 45 inch pounds (snug, plus 1/4 turn) so no need to splurge on grade 8 hardware

regarding the cam cover gasket- your idea to stretch the Datsun 311 gasket is probably the way to go... you can even warm it up in the oven at 150-170 degrees for 10-15 minutes to loosen up the cork a little bit and that might help it stretch out as well.

I like the blue paint. I think I know which one it is, others have used it. It looks good. :D You can send those handy helper down this way when you're done with them, I've got several Patrol projects to keep them busy. ;)

Duplicolor 1621 Old Ford Blue.... Am I correct?

I am going to use the early Chevrolet blue that they used on trucks in the 50's and early 60's when I do my other Patrol's engine - it is the same shade as the Nissan color, with just a bit more gray in it, but since I already have 2 cans of it in the paint cabinet, it's close enough ;)

Okay, I'll fess up...

One of the valve covers has a little remaining splotch of original blue paint so the plan was to match to that -- My lovely wife, Emily, and I went paint color shopping. Of course, we left the valve cover at home. I was SURE that the Old Ford Blue paint exactly matched the valve cover; Emily was sure it was the GM Blue... Being keenly aware of the risks involved in the decision at hand, I chose to go with the GM Blue! ;-) When we got home it matched perfectly... See just how wise I am?

Anyway, here's the evidence (and notice how close the cap matches the paint):

Yeah, the GM corporate blue looked very close to me as well. I think either of the following rattle-can colors would work pretty well:

1) Old Ford Blue (Which was used on 65-older Ford V8's - not to be confused with generic Ford Blue, or new Ford blue, which are both too dark and too purple) - Old Ford Blue is just a shade lighter than the example of the Nissan blue I found on my 66's transfer case when I stripped off the light blue

2) GM Corporate Blue (used on engines in most 77-82 GM cars and trucks) LIke Faux40 says above-- this one is probably the closest "off the shelf" option to the Nissan blue

This one is also close, but not exact:

Chevrolet Blue (used on some chevrolet truck engines 55-61) LIke I stated above, it has a bit more gray to it, but the shade of blue is almost a dead ringer for the Nissan color

And these are not close at all:

Chryler Blue (It's too turquoise)
Chrysler light blue (too light)
Dark Ford Blue (too purple)

But I'll tell ya- matching the blue on the later Patrol engines is a breeze compared to that greyish green color they used on the early Patrols. Collecting tons of pictures (thanks Audrey and Leslie), as well as RMPO's 64 restoration project on ExpeditionPortal, I found that there is a range of variability in that green color from a very light yellowish grey-green, to a more medium, olive toned green

There is not an off the shelf engine paint option for anything close to that color anywhere that I found- and the local paint store that I have worked with forever wanted 85 bucks a quart for a custom ceramic engine color blend, so I said "no thanks" to that.

I ended up using Rustoleum Sage on my 66's engine, which is only temperature rated up to 300 degrees F, but I think it should hold up ok (Like a total dork, I test-sprayed some on the outside of my barbeque before cooking up some burgers to see how it would fare against the heat  )

The Sage is more more green than some of the yellowish samples I've seen of the Nissan color, but it matched other samples (especially the original color air box from Urban60's totalled camo 64) very closely.

Even more progress! Lookie, lookie!
2499

Anwyay, ended up getting grade 8 bolts for the pan and timing cover -- the difference in price wasn't too bad on such cute little bolts. Joe and I spent time time today bolting down the oil pan, installing the timing cover and side cover. That cover was a bit of a challenge as the gasket was a bit too small so we used some gasket adhesive to allow us to stretch and clamp it in place -- once it was really tacky, we installed it easily. Nice to see some obvious progress!

The side cover challenge - The adhesive worked like a charm!:

And here he properly torques the bolts:

On another note -- Still looking for a generator or parts of a generator!

I may be able to scrounge up a piece of generator.
We've got about 80 years of random junk at my workplace.
If I can't find a match, I can repair the existing piece.
No charge except shipping.
Send me either the piece or the whole thing.
Is your Patrol pos or neg ground? My 64 Datsun pickup was pos ground with gen, but I changed it about 35 years ago to pos ground alternator so I could get some tunes on my 8 track.
The 8 track is deceased...alternator still goin' strong.
