I'm changing the rear differential bearings. Will start a separate thread with pictures in a few days.
Have the whole axle out, and while at it, I will repack the wheel bearings with new grease.

Esteban, is this because you need to as in hearing noise or just feel like doing it, knowing that the originals have been in there too long? in my paperwork i found where the first owner changed out a wheel bearing, but as far as i know, nothing else has been done. this weighs on my mind every time i take the patrol out in the back 40

Butch, the noise developed from one week to the next. I try to drive to work once a week, a 40 mile roundtrip. The first week that I noticed, it was a faint noise. The next week, it was a bit more, so I was concerned. Used my IR thermometer and the readings were giving about 15 to 20 degrees F more at the pinion side (next to the flange) that at other places in the pumpkin. The noise remained while coasting, although diminishing a bit. Oil level was good, and I have changed it some months ago. Changed to a heavier oil, and no difference.

With the help of Ron, 2869ral further diagnosed the problem. Thanks Ron! I removed the propeller to drive the car only in front wheel drive, to rule out that the noise was coming from the transfer case. I then noticed that the nut at the pinion was loose. But remember, there's a cotter pin there, so I found it strange that it was loose. Time to dismantle and reality check.

It's still early to say that the bearings, that are shot, are going to correct the problem. Ron thinks that the bearings going bad can trash in some cases the contact surface of the ring and pinion, so time will tell. Before taking apart everything, I did some contact patterns and they look good. The pinion bearings do look bad, so I'm confident that this will be the cause. Will post pictures.

One thing Patrol owners should be at ease with the ring and pinion going bad, and this is something that I have done in the past, is to swap the front and rear differentials, complete with all the bearings and shims in the same place, and call it good. Most Patrols here in the USA have locking hubs in the front axle, so wear of the front diff is very little.

The bearings arrived yesterday, so next week I'm heading to the press.

didn't know that you could swap the differentials around, that is good to know. if mine were to start making noise, i doubt that i would hear it in time. my cab is loud, and i am half death in one ear, after years of standing in front of a lathe, and maybe some loud music back in the day didn't help either. good luck on the repair, and please post lots of pictures for guys like me who don't have a clue what they are doing on repairs.

Last week:

1) Threw both Patrols up on jack stands and tore the brakes out.
2) Removed a noisy water pump (again) and took it to Kellogg's in Maricopa to be rebuilt
3) Gasped, recoiled, and then cried like a little girl when Will Kellogg told me how much it was going to cost to have my water pump rebuilt

This coming week:

1) Drop off 16 brake shoes, and 8 drums, at Arizona Brake and Clutch to be turned and re-lined.
2) Take my documents for the Grean death-mobile to DMV office to have a bond amount set for the title
3) Order a power brake booster (or two)
4) Take a look at Socalwrenchers Chevy/Ford hybrid HEI distributor, and see if I can work the wobble out of it so he can use it in his Patrol.
