65 Patrol Rebuild Starts Here

Thank you RiverPatrol, I am sure you would quickly sort out my problems. Before the last major overhaul I had an occasion rattle in the top of my motor. It would come and go. Now, after rebuilding the clutch and transmission there is a vibration you can't see when looking at the motor during operation but can be felt in the steering wheel.

I will pick Presidio Patrol (CCV4) up at 10:00 am this morning and turn it over to Ed Brown, the fourth mechanic. I will drop off CCV5 to King Kong Craig to finally finish up a few little things. I think it needs a new fuel sending unit. Can those be bought or rebuilt? The gauge has already rebuilt at the cost equal to the value of my used envelope and tree frog collections. Both wiper motors have been rebuilt at an equally high price but they still don't wipe......but they will!

Perhaps the new mechanic can diagnose the fuel sender and wipers? They both require a good ground, maybe it's that simple.

I think we are on the right track. King Kong Craig fixed many things and finished 17 of the 18 holes. Ed, my fourth mechanic spent 90 minutes looking over Presidio Patrol. He said it ran and sounded good.

Notes:
a). The rattle is in the valves and he thinks they can be adjusted, though the oil pump maybe sending too little oil up to the head. He will check that. I have a new spare oil pump if needed.
b). He indicated a little piston in the carb was not performing correctly and causing the rich burn, then something that failure contributed to something sending fuel in the wrong direction when revved which caused it to cough.
c). The internal exhaust manifold flapper gate is missing the exterior counterweight. I recall it was on there at one time, one of the mechanics must have lost it, but I have a spare.
d). He will replace a few aged hoses.

Bottom line....there should be no need to rebuild the motor! We are standing on the 18th tee and driving down the final fairway.

Mechanic #4, Eddy Brown thinks he has the carb tuned and motor smoothed out. He says it smokes a bit but should be fine. I will field test it this weekend.

First, I really appreciate receiving the locked rear gears. I thought they were a great solution but it turns out Presidio Patrol will be on the pavement more than it should be with those gears. So we are pulling them out of Presidio Patrol. King Kong Craig thinks it is applying too much stress on the whole rear end, while on pavement. After driving my other Patrol off road recently I am sure I will be ok with unlocked gears on every surface except that black oilcan mud we have at Liar's Lair.

So, if anyone needs a set of locked gears in pristine condition they are here.

Why don't you put the locked diff on the front, with free wheeling hubs? That way they are only being used when 4WDing. I think it would be unstoppable then!

I'm considering something like that and be interested in your opinion.

Your suggestion seems like a winner to me but as my comments indicate...I know not of the mysteries and nuances of the vintage Nissan Patrol. However, we are blessed to have Patrol whisperers that seemingly formed the first clay models from rough drawings on the chalk board.

So, again, I like the idea. I think that topic has been covered before, but I can't recall the conclusion.

Therefore, Peter60 and I are would appreciate your collective opinion on this modification.

The opinions go both ways, and most of of the guys that are against have other options that we don't have for the Patrol. It's not about money in this case. Interesting that when you're actually off-road, you can disconnect just one wheel and go 3-wheeling until the needs come to lock the hub on the other front wheel.

Sooner or later, something has to give, and the same was true for the locker on the rear axle. So in order to do it, also have a spare front axle for parts. At least you know that if something breaks inside, you'll still be able to drive back with the hubs disconnected.

Disclaimer: I'm not a heavy off-road guy, so I don't know what I'm talking about!

Thank you Esteban. So from what I can tell at least the Lincoln Locker will fit. Then, after that I have to take the risk.
