Just kidding of course. Why the coil? I would never suspect. Ah the wonders of vehicles. Please supply more info on how you did this

HAHAHA.... Nice guy. If I got stranded out in the desert, I would expect a platoon of Patrol owners to come and get me... Simpson Desert style.

Troubleshooting went like this - Firstly I knew it wasn't the fuel tank or the feed line - all of that was cleaned out, the inside of the tank was de-rusted with an acid bath, and the lines were all blown out; and I have a clear fuel filter on the Patrol that is not collecting any rust or sediment from the tank at all.

So, I started it up and ran it until it sputtered and died (took about 10 minutes) - Since I had the hood open the whole time, and could touch the fuel line without getting burned, I pretty much knew it wasn't going to be vapor lock.

So, I hooked up my fuel pressure gauge to the fuel pump outlet and cranked it for about 30 seconds: Fuel pressure- check

Then I looked down the carb and pumped the throttle- I could see the accelerator pump was shooting gas - so, gas was present in the carb- check. (strike 2 against vapor lock )

Then I hooked the fuel line back up to the fuel pump, and fired it back up again - it started normally, ran about 10 minutes, then died again.

So this time, I hooked up the timing light to the number one spark plug wire and cranked it while I watched for spark : nuthin... AHA - Now we're getting somewhere.

a couple minutes later, I crank it over and it fires back up again, so I hold my hand on the coil while it's running - it runs about 5 minutes, then suddenly the coil gets very hot, the engine dies, and coil instantly gets so hot it burns my hand.

so I dig around in my spare parts and find an old Accel Chrome coil from who knows when, or from what vehicle I took it off of, but I hooked it up, started the engine, and it ran even better than it did before, and this 2nd coil did not get hot at all, even after running for about 15 minutes...

And there you have it -

It's elementary, my dear Watson....elementary.

We've had a nice, overcast break in the weather the past couple days (today it "only" topped out at 102 )

so, I got in some time on the green Patrol. I got the clutch adjusted, and I cut 3 inches off the bottom of the rollbar so it will line up with the top of the windshield frame better; and I got it sanded down and re-painted:



for seats, I'm using the ones that were originally in the red patrol, but I couldn't very well throw them in looking like this:



So after scrubbing the seats with degreaser and drying them off, out came the SEM vinyl coating (same stuff I used on the rim of the steering wheel) and soon the seats were looking like brand new black vinyl:




Here is a closeup so you can see how well this SEM product works for re-coloring vinyl - I have used this stuff for 20 years and I am SOLD on it




so I'll let that stuff dry overnight before installing it back in the Patrol

Black vinyl in AZ?

I'm so old that I can hardly believe this stuff doesn't just flake off. But, after reading up a bit on reviews it does seem to be satisfying for even pro car and marine folks in terms of sticking and being plyable for a seat. It obviously looks great, although your custom candy stripe Christmas carriage is no longer!!!
Times change and you have to hand it to the chemists and all the hard work and discovery here for figuring stuff out.....remember trying to paint plastic in the 70's and 80's? Good for a movie set and that was about it. Now we have real rust converters that double as a primer and plastic paint ....and this plyable product as well......
...I'm almost a believer...Keep a watch and let's do a good assessment in one year on your seats. Another plus is if one has to touch up down the road you can....rattle can!

(But that is a good point - If I was going to subject these seats to the AZ sun, then I would have sprung the extra 8 bucks a can for the Marine formula, which has extra UV inhibitors)


I've used SEM color coat since the late 90's, on probably 10 different projects - I have no doubt these seats will still be black a year from now - they won't be as shiny, but they won't be cracking or peeling.

One other thing I will mention, the vinyl on these seats was already in REALLY good condition- it was just the wrong color -- I don't suggest that this stuff will RESTORE old vinyl seats - it only works to change the color of existing fabric; but the condition of the fabric before spraying, will also be the condition of the fabric AFTER spraying...
