Mad4hws,
You make a real and good point and I do have a reputation to uphold. I know the floorboard will be black so I am really now only matching the dash and interior doors. Like I said, I'm a veg. My two previous builds were military green but i'm not feeling it on this one. Presidio Patrol will be a copy of Ivan's flat sand with black trim so we have that side of the scale covered. I really would prefer a color I could touch up without it being obvious because the desert ocotillo is rough on the front fenders as are the mesquites at Liar's Lair.

I am vexed again.

The veg has firmed up. The Green Machine will remain green. It will be a deep chocolate olive green.

Greetings Patrolees,

Well, the Green Machine has some strong points but some significant challenges as well. Rafael is going through the brakes, gears and suspension. We are sending the water pump to Kellogg and replacing fluids and hoses. The motor and interior are good. Our big challenge will be rust repair. Pictures on the work forthcoming.

Greetings Patrolees,

I can report the following costs as we go through the drive train.

a). Kellogg charges $225 to rebuild the water pump, turnaround is about two weeks.
b). Alcan is softening the leaf springs they are building for the Green Machine, cost about $1200 with 4 week delivery. new leaf springs will have 1" lift.
c). I found a new water pump, though not exactly like the original. For about $150 you get pump and required gasket/spacer. Plentiful supply.
d). For about $250 I found a new oil pump. They claimed it was the last one available. Anyway, I may not need it and it is our second spare oil pump.
e). I had the radiator removed and pressure tested, one day turnaround for $115 included a flush and minor repairs.
f). I'm having the upper grill and above dash air vent cages chromed, two week turnaround for about $300.
g). I have made 5 purchases off Ebay sellers from the US, Australia and Columbia. All suppliers have delivered the goods which included window rubber, carb rebuild kit, exterior door handles, O & M Manual, used spare OEM parts. I can say if the part comes from a Patrol owner it will be as advertised. Generally the reproduction parts are a trap. The sellers don't give enough detail to confirm the parts will fit until after the sale. We hear that many parts fit all 60 series machines. That really isn't the case for most of what the ebay sellers are selling. The TX seller selling 60 series exterior door handles was particularly unwilling to take responsibility for selling door handles that only fit 15% of the 60 series. He naturally had no interest in taking them back after requested cancellation of the order within a couple of hours and prior to shipment. If the ebay seller is a real company with a service department and knowledgeable sales people then everything is fine, they generally know which part goes with which year model.
h). Anything sourced from within the Patrol forum is a wonderful experience. The club members have been so generous with the their time and spare parts it makes the experience of rebuilding these old billy goats allot of fun. I can't offer any technical advice but maybe I will have something someone wants. I can share the costs I'm incurring to have professionals rebuild the Patrols. Above costs do not include labor.
i). We are going with stock OEM 15" standard wheels with tubeless tires. Sidewall flats are the big issue in the TX Hill Country & W TX so we purposely are moving away from split rim wheels. The tube split trim wheels require means a complete disassembly of the wheel/tube/tire/rim for a field fix. Standard tubeless wheel/tires can simply be plugged in place.
The rejuvenated Green Machine will be sent off to El Choppo in, Mexico for paint & body in August.

Thank you for this very comprehensive report! This is great information for every new Patroller.

In regards to c), did you mean a fuel pump? And could you list the source?

Yes, buying on eBay is always risky. Engine and mechanical parts are usually a safe purchase since there were very few changes over the years. But body and trim parts are always suspect. It's always a good idea to ask before you buy.

Patrolees,
Please note, the all knowing, all seeing....and keen eye of RiverPatrol caught a typo in my last post. Item C on my summary was meant to be fuel pump, not water pump. So far...the best part of these rebuilds has been this awesome forum.

Re: Green Machine Rebuild Starts 5-9-16 - Patrollee Help Nee

Post by L60Boerne »

Greetings, all the parts we though we needed to rebuild the Green Machine were in or coming in within days so Rafael starting demobilizing the rear axles. Well, though it was probably fine for its home in PA it pretty much needs a total rebuild for reliable Patrolling.

All bearings and seals but Rafael thinks he has those covered.

So we are now looking for sources for 1963:

- Wheel Cylinders
- axle shims
- bearing seals

The complete break system needs a total rebuild as does the fuel line and tank..but we have that handled.

Any help would be appreciated.

I tried to post picture, my pixels were well below the minimum 600 x 800, if i recall but they would not upload.

Mama said there would be days like this.

Here is a link to an EBay source for the wheel cylinders: http://www.ebay.com/itm/331677862533?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT . You could contact them and see if they have the shims you need. Be sure to let them know that you have the smaller (C220?) differential.

Picture pixel size can be up to 1280 x 1040. The file size needs to be smaller than 2 megabytes ( I think). I have no problem attaching pictures from this iPad without having to resize them in any way. Maybe you're going about it incorrectly. Contact me and I'll try to walk you through it.
