60Patrol

Update:

Well, we were in the process of loading the Patrol onto the auto transporter and guy that I bought it from mentioned that one of the tires on the rear axle looked low as we pulled the Patrol up the loading ramps. We inspected further and the passenger side rear axle U-bolts had come completely off and the spring was hanging there. Both U-bolts, nuts and mounting blocks were GONE. You could move the wheel/axle forward/backwards about 8 inches both ways...... . Dont know how long it had been this way. The U-haul rep picked it up a few hrs ago and Im in a hotel room for the night. Should have another auto transporter first thing in the morning.

The good thing: The Patrol was not on it!!!!! Could have been a disaster.

The bag thing: I have to pickup a new auto transporter in the morning.

I was able to look at the Patrol a little closer and have several initial observations:

1) The guy I bought it from purchased it from a little old lady (I know, classic story). It was in her farm field with weeds grown up around it so high you couldn't see it. She contacted the guy I bought it from and asked how much it would be worth as scrap metal... . He saved it from the crusher!!!!!! He pulled it to his house and it stayed there untouched for 3 yrs until he listed it on CL. It originally came from Idaho.

2) Has original side steps in good condition
3) Has original jack
4) Has original waterproof distributor cap boots
5) CB antenna mounted on the side of the hardtop
6) Rear seats are in very nice condition
7) Anti-freeze in radiator (Looked new)
8) Oil level good
9) Electric fuel pump has been installed
10) Passenger side front bumper is bent in........
11) Original locking hubs
12) The rusted floor area that is visible in the picture he sent me was dark red carpet..... Rear floor area is in nice shape.....whew!
13) Upper and lower air filter housing is there but the middle section is missing

Wow, that axle situation could have caused you to have a very bad day in a big way. Good thing it was noticed before you headed down the road!

The Patrol sounds to be in very sound condition, just as I thought it would be. NE is a long way from ID for it to come, but you're lucky to end up with it. Patrols from ID don't seem to have the serious rust issues like ones from wetter climates do. I won't be surprised if it starts fairly easily for you.

Which reminds me, you had mentioned disconnecting the fuel line near the tank to run from a portable fuel source. It will be easier if you disconnect the fuel line at the fuel filter instead. The reason for that is that the fuel line is metal from just before the fuel filter all the way back to the tank.

Original side steps in good condition is very rare for a '69. They were welded on and usually got crunched off-road and then cut off. Just another indication that the Patrol hasn't been thrashed.

Be home in just a few hrs. Regional U-haul rep called this afternoon while driving. They are only charging me $55 (one day rental) instead of 4 days due to the breakdown. They are paying last nights hotel bill and the gas bill to go back and forth to the hotel, plus meals. My frustration level is much lower now....

Oh....by the way, the yellow strap over the hood looks kinda Ghetto by I didn't want the Frackin hood coming open as I motored down the road....

Ghetto? Looks perfectly secure....just what I would do.

I'm glad they gave you an auto transport... whats wrong with strapping down the hood?

Sounds like I made the correct call...... I've had a hood fly up before, not pretty!

The Patrol is officially unloaded and at its new home. My son cleaned it out this afternoon with a shop vac. We saved every nut, bolt or spring that was on the floor, along with paperwork, old spark plug boxes, etc...just in case we need them as a reference item. I will take plenty of pictures in the coming days and place them in my gallery.

I have a few questions:

1. In order to open the left side rear door, do you push down on the round lever located on the bottom and release the lever on the top? I think the round lever below is rusted and will not move. I sprayed WD40 all over the assembly today and then poured a little oil on it. Hopefully this will help. I think I just need to dip the entire Patrol in WD40.....lol. It has been sitting for a loooong time. It is not all rusted up but things just need a little oil.

2. For those of you that have taken the body off the frame, how long did it take? I'm contemplating my next move after a successful engine start.
