Test fitting the brake/hub assembly. Making sure nothing goes missing (I hope) due to time With that mostly done it was finally time to get the engine/transmission out. Based on the horror stories people told of the engine's weight I was expecting it to be harder, but fortunately it was pretty easy. Ancient engine hoist had no issues. Frame was finally ready for prep work, so a good'ish cleaning was in order. I have more time than money so no acid dipping or anything like that. Just a pressure washer, angle grinder, elbow grease. Knock on wood it'll come out decent when done. Got 99% done with the POR-15 treatment tonight, so I'll give that some time to dry and tackle the rest tomorrow. Engine and transmission mounts are pretty much obliterated, so I need to figure out what to do about those. Then it's off to get the front leaf springs checked out, do some more cleaning, and reassemble the drivetrain. Of course that's all easier said than done and at my pace should be complete around 2025 or so.

Been a long time since I've been here. I feel like this thread should be further down than it is!

Shockingly progress has been slow. Fortunately, there's mostly good reasons for that. Reason one was the garage update continues First up was of course insulation, then the absolute he** of installing drywall, and lastly installing the Mini-Split AC unit. Fun Facts:
1. 4x8 sheets of drywall are easier to install by yourself than 4x10
2. Measure three times! There wasn't a single right angle in my entire garage.
3. Senville instructions are kinda bad and, while DIY, the kit doesn't come with everything needed. They'll also void the warranty if you charge the unit yourself.

With that finally done (though I still need to do the ceiling) I was able to get back to the Patrol. Finished the Por-15 treatment minus a few nooks and crannies I need to do. I was then delayed further when the Sonoma started overheating. That lead down its own rabbit hole as the new radiator didn't have the right size fittings for the oil cooler, so now that truck has external oil and transmission coolers, a new aluminum radiator, electric fan, and a few other goodies. I need to clean up the lines a little bit, but that's a job for Future Me. So! Once again I was able to get back to the Nissan. Started back on the disassembly and cleaning and found this with the E-Brake setup. I need to sift through this site, but I'm pretty sure that's not stock... Looks like a PO added some sort of extension piece as well as a lot of springs as well as a lot of washers. I'm guessing the adjustment rod was seized but I haven't tried fixing it all just yet and this seems like the harder of the two options.

Good news though. I found that a female to female socket adapter is the perfect tool to remove the locking screws for the ebrake assembly Transfer case removed and getting cleaned Skip a few steps and everything is back together, cleaned, and painted Taking a break on the engine side to move onto the front diff. I haven't looked yet as this is where I had to stop for the day but I'm thinking maybe water got into it or it's just the wrong oil someone put in there? Looks kinda milky or not quite right though. Heck of a lot thicker than the rear diff.

It doesn't look bad the differential gears. Is your axle fitted with locking hubs? Maybe the lack of movement and some water condensation over the years. At least it looks that everything is coated.

Maybe some other members can chime in regarding the emergency brake. Don't have the diagrams at hand at this time.

River - That's extremely helpful. I'd been looking at pictures but none clearly showed the assembly as one unit like that. Thank you.
I got very lucky and found most of the ebrake parts I need, but does anyone have the bits circled? It should just be a spring & screw I need now.

From your picture of the differential, it doesn't show any damage due to rust inside, so probably the bearings are still in decent shape. If you have locking hubs, the differential will remain as it is right now for ages. And the times you'll use it in 4x4, are going to be at low speeds. If that was mine, I will not dismantle. The carrier bearing are unobtanium, and fitting other bearings require including spacers or additional shims, which in turn involve calibrating the gears again. Not worth the trouble. (I think I should include a disclaimer here... )

For the missing parts for the e-brake, the bolt can be fabricated out of a regular bolt. Just cut the head and saw a slot in it. I did that once. As for the spring that goes inside, I hope some member could have an extra one. Otherwise you'll need measurements to find a suitable replacement. It's not that critical the strength, and as long as it is close enough it will work.

Figured out the eBrake situation thanks to the help of some kind folks, the manual, and playing around with it. With that finally done and adjusted I went back to cleaning and cleaning up past lazyness. Two things I've never been happy with - the alternator and the bracket it's on. When I swapped the alternator Amazon sent me the wrong one. Instead of a GM 1-wire I got this unit. Not a horrible thing as it was "better" than the one I ordered, but it required some adjustments. I also ordered a universal alternator bracket when I got it, but I've never like it. It's big and bulky, doesn't match anything, and generally stuck out like a sore bracket. Alternator is now clean of misc. wires going nowhere and I did some welding practice to cut down the bracket, weld the parts together, grind and paint it. Still need some practice with the welder but after a couple of tries got it pretty solid. Sadly no pictures of it once I was finally happy with it except till the engine was back in the frame.

Finally moved on to the front of the engine. While taking off the water pump I found that the new gasket that came with the kit has a secondary, small, round hole in it that my stock (I'm assuming) gasket didn't have. The water pump itself does have the hole there though... Ultimately, since the truck had never overheated in Texas summer weather I decided to just make my own gasket w/o the hole. Used some Fel-Pro 3075 and tested it on my 63 Sprite to see how it would hold up. Stopped the leak from the thermostat housing on that car so that's good enough for me. Got the front diff cleaned up, painted, and put the engine mostly back together. So now I'm almost close to having a rolling chassis again. The engine was an absolute ***** to put back in and the passenger side engine mount won't thread correctly, so I need to take that off to check it out. Doing it all by myself has some downsides as I bumped the engine putting back in and now the transfer case leaks ever so slightly from the e-brake area. So two steps forward, one step back, but it's all coming together.
