No synchro in first gear

>>no that was my first reply to this thread...   Ah, good, because when you said:   >>like I said to begin with....   One would get the impression that you had said something about prior to what your saying now. So I was wondering if maybe my broweser was missing a msg or something.   >>and yes I double clutch coming to a stop   Huh... well more power to you, but I just dont see the need to go into 1st from 2nd when comming to a stop, once you are stopped, sure, but while moving? Thanks but no thanks.   Grant

Okay-having mentioned before that I really don't know what double clutching means, could someone tell me? I have driven tons of trucks-dating back to some very old very large farm trucks, etc, and have heard this term my whole life, but never quite knew what it meant. Can anyone fill me in on this? Also, where was the crank for the hadn starting method stored? I have not seen one anywhere on my vehicle, but love hearing you guys talk about it-want to see if I do have one. And is ther ea picture of one anywhere? I had a couple little old Renaults that had these, but never tried then either-but I bet it would have been MUCH easier-the engine was about half the size!!!Thanks!Michael_________________________________________________________________MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx

the hand crack was mounted to the rear of the front seats, rubber groments that held it very well....hand crack has two small posts (for lack of a better word) on the end. These fit into the front of your engine block and if you take a close look this is beveled, probily to cause the crank to eject after starting saving your hands from breakage.....I started my truck with hand crank very easily, even though my truck was/is in bad shape....you simply find TDC (top dead center) make sure she has fuel and crank...takes a bit of muscle but mine fired first try...damn near broke my hand tho.   double clutching is just a method to slow things down in the transmission and allow for alinngment....too fast and grindage, to slow and grindage, less your completely stopped. It helped me a bunch simply cause my truck was/is beat up with lot's of worn parts. It took me a while to get it down but after I did no more grindage....like I said it simply worked for me, give it a try yourself. Press the clutch to the floor and then begin to release it, when you feel it start to engauge start pressing it agin tho not to the floor and at the same time slide it into gear....takes a bit of practice but it is not hard.

In refrence to double clutching--I went through a truck driving school for a few months in order to get my CDL. There we were taught to double clutch. On semis double clutching is lightly tapping the clutch pedal to get it out of gear and again lightly touching it to get it in to the next gear. Quickly and smoothly. You don't push it all the way to the floor as you would when starting out from neutral to first. Down shifting is done by matching ground speed with RPMs.  I'm not sure about the Patrol because I don't double clutch it. However  when coming to a stop and down shifting to first it also is RPMs vs. ground speed. Mine is just before coming to a complete stop. On the other hand mine grinds when going from neutral to first or reverse, so maybe my bearing is bad also. Unless there is some sort of adjustment on the hydraulic clutch cylinder pushrod??????? Granted the Patrol is not a 18 wheeler but just an explanation of double clutching.  Keith
