Thank you Esteban (there never seems to be the thank you button next to your posts). For some foolish reason I was thinking the rear drive shaft would turn by hand, completely forgetting it is locked into the rear axle (unlike the front drive shaft).

I went looking for the additional 2 grease fittings in the front axle and 2 grease fittings in or near the bearing cap and struck out. I found only the one grease fitting on the axle jacket (one on both sides). What am I missing?

Is it possible that I have a CV joint system and I don't have any more fittings, as the Esso Service chart would suggest? According to the chart, that would mean I have only two front axle housing fittings and 8 front suspension and steering linkage fittings. Or is the chart incorrect?

Today I was looking at various Parts Manuals.

1. CV joints or Birfield joints, were fitted on Patrols beginning 1971 (I've said ~1968. That's wrong) So you still have the Tracta-joints.

2. It looks that the upper knuckle flange was changed from a cone-bearing to a roller-bearing type at some point after 1965. I hope RiverPatrol can give us the right answer and dates on this one. The cone-bearing type needs the grease fittings.

An additional note on the grease fitting on the axle jacket, near to the end. Tracta-joints axles have a bushing in that area, and that requires periodic greasing. If you put too much, part of the grease will end up going to the differential, and a lot to the inside of the large ball where the knuckle flange rides. Since most Patrols sold in the USA were fitted with free-wheeling hubs, greasing this fitting can be done at larger intervals, unless you're a heavy off-roader.

If you ever dismantle the Tracta-joints, make sure to keep each side of the axle separate, since the parts are matted, and more so after some wear.

I think that was the change that you thought happened in '68.

Thanks again Esteban. The extent of my serious off-roading will be about Zero.

I remember reading a post saying the hardtop on a 69 Patrol was different than on the earlier years. I have the opportunity to get one from a 69 that I want to put on my 64. What exactly is the difference? I have looked at a bazillion pictures online and they look the same
