Faux your son if infected with the G60 bug, his a good fella who doesn't mind getting dirty, most of us newer generation love video games, but its young one like your son and my self who rather get out and get dirty.

Regarding before you asked about engine no and which engine to use, keep the original in it, and then freshen it up, as It probably doesn't require rebuilding.

Please check pm's I sent you a couple

Yeah, I've seen a lot of old engines torn down - when coolant is seeping into the combustion chambers they look nice and clean - too clean, in fact.

When oil has been getting past the rings, it leaves a crusty, shiny build up.

Normal combustion chambers will have a light layer of soot, and no heavy deposits. Your head should be a slam dunk rebuild for the local shop.

numbers 2, 4 and 5 look normal.
Looks like there's been some coolant seepage into 1,3 and 6 and number 6 also looks like it has had some oil getting past the rings.
Just to get this clear since your explanation is really good. Cyl #1 is the one at the right of the picture

The engine as a whole looks good! Congratulations.

Yes, exactly. Thanks Esteban. Number 6 is also the one in his closeup picture - pretty typical oil deposits in that one, but I agree - engine looks like it should be a simple rebuild from the top.

John- when you get the main and rod bearing caps off the bottom end, try to post some shots of your bearing surfaces from those as well...

You guys are great! Thanks!

Quick question -- Right now, the engine stinks from the residual gas filled oil that remains in it. When I pull the pan, I want to clean it up -- do you think it would harm anything to take it to the coin-operated car wash with a bunch of simple green and pressure wash the inside and cylinders?

Thanks!

Nope.

However, I would remove the crankshaft, cam, and pistons before washing out the block. Don't forget to really force that high pressure water down all the coolant passages to get that sediment out...

the oil pan, valve cover, and timing cover can all be soaked in degreaser, and then shot with a high pressure wash as well

A quick update -- Jay and I dropped the head off at the local machine shop. $55 to disassemble, clean and inspect the head. $74 more for a basic valve grind and reassembly... assuming everything else is okay. Sounds okay to me. We'll get the status on it Monday afternoon or Tuesday.

The machinist was not familiar with the P engine, but has seen a P40 engine so I guess he's in the know, right?

I don't think there is much difference in the heads between the P and the P40. What he's doing is pretty basic, he just needs to know the angle for the valve seats, which as I recall is 45 degrees. The valves have plenty of meat on them so you shouldn't need to replace any. Good job! That's some fast progress!
Beyond any hope for intervention

Of course. We think we're going to have the same machine shop clean and inspect the block... much of reason is for the cleaning so the paint will look good!

Jay wants it painted the stock Nissan engine blue (the rest of the family agrees!). :D

By the way, I have some fenders with your name on them if you want them...
