You're setting "static" advance and don't want vacuum or mechanical advance fudging the setting. There shouldn't be any mechanical advance at idle but there will be vacuum advance if you don't disable it. If you don't block the hose the idle will be higher and may hunt as the manifold vacuum will suck in extra air and lean out the fuel mixture.

I have to disagree a little bit, mostly due to the fact that at idle vacuum at the distributor is negligible and won't affect the timing setup. Vacuum develops under throttle conditions when you're demanding power of the engine.

So the bottom line is that the outcome should be the same.

Fair enough, your knowledge and experience with the P motor is acknowledged ! :)

Easy to confirm for anyone with a running Patrol, a timing light and 5 minutes to spare...sadly I'm missing the first one right now :(

I was going to test mine, getting readings of vacuum at the advance port at idle and at different throttle conditions, because you have me second guessing.

My dad used to do it your method. The Service Manuals have not much info on this.

How do you check and add steering gear lube?

On top of the steering box you have a plug next to the adjusting bolt. You fill the oil up to the bottom of the fill plug threads (to allow the plug to go in again). Regular transmission oil goes there (API GL-4) 90W

Looks like somebody capped the old style breather tube with that gizmo.

In older Patrols or in regions without emissions requirements, a chimney pipe coming out from that hole in the block allowed the crankcase fumes to vent freely.

Guess I'll open it up and see if it is a pcv device.

What are you using for the heater fresh air flapper gasket?

Body to frame bushings... two steal plates or one? Pretty sure I have seen both while talking apart.
