As far as I know - be sure to save the old one. I think it's actually 2 pieces; one flat and one triangle shaped to fill in the gap. It might all be one piece.

River, I have no clue if I still have those!!! I took that apart many years ago!!! Guess I will need to do some digging to see if I can find them somewhere...

I couldn't find a good picture of it in the parts book....

I don't ever recall seeing any kind of picture of it.

How hot does the gearbox/transfer case get?
I just put in a 3 speed box as my Marks 5 speed is out for repair. When I was checking for oil leaks after a half hour highway drive (2WD) I noticed the gearbox and transfer case were hot.. I could touch them but they were hotter than I expected. Is that normal? It is summer here so the day temperature was 28c (80F). They did have oil in them.

They do get hot as you mention. Probably 40C (105F) at least.

I found a temperature log from when I rebuilt the rear differential. I think it does gets hotter than the transmission, but the transmission also gets some influence from the engine.

Temperature at the body of the differential: 140F (60C) - ambient temperature: 50F (10C)
Temperature at the cover: 116F (47C)
Temperature at the Transfer Case: 128F (53C)

The temperatures were taken after 20 miles (32 Km) of driving.

I do have one reading taken after 65 miles (104 Km) of driving at highway speeds, and the differential body was at 134F (57C), but the transfer case was at 160F (71C)

I should take some more readings!

Only Esteban would have a log of temperature readings on his transmission.

I always use an infrared thermometer to check some things in car. And the reason I took the readings of my differential was after the rebuilt I did. Previously, a strange noise was coming from that area. The thermometer revealed a very high temperature of the pinion bearing closer to the U-joint. After the repair, and since I did all the gear contact calibration, I was concerned about it, and was monitoring the temperatures.

I haven't taken readings in months, however.

Does the wire that goes to the thermostat branch off from the wire loom that goes to the alternator? I found the thermostat but it has no wires attached? I see a pale yellow wire that isn’t attached to anything but does appear to be long enough to attach to it.

Yes, that yellow wire is the wire to the temp sender.
