Stupid question of the day...

Which flare is used for the front brake line to the hose? I seem to have one of each, bubble and inverted. I am inclined to go with the inverted, just for ease of finding a hose, but curiosity regarding what it "should be" is gnawing at me.

I was wondering if someone could take a max high temperature reading of the engine bay near the firewall/MC area with the hood closed and preferably after a bit of driving or during the drive. Any help would be appreciated.

What is the diameter of the Patrol gauge clusters? Doesn't have to be exact, plus or minus 1/8" is fine. (Won't be back to the Patrol for a week, and am looking at some aftermarket gauges )

I'm in the process of putting in a VW TDI engine into my G60. I'm just looking at what I need to do as far as the electrical circuits are concerned.

I'm unsure of what the voltage regulator does and if I need to keep it.

I've read that some modern alternators have in-built voltage regulators. I'm using the standard VW TDI alternator and unsure if it has a built in voltage regulator.

I guess it must be similar to just upgrading the standard G60 alternator with a new modern alternator.

Any advice/ideas of what I should do???

You probably don't need to do anything to it. The VW TDI alternator most probably has an internal regulator. And if not, you can install a exterior voltage regulator from any brand. I will not use the original from the G60 mostly because of time on the unit and the mechanical nature of it.

Alternators are very simple in concept, and any voltage regulator will do the trick. When the time comes, a couple of pictures from the alternator and its terminals is all that I will need to guide you.

In my Patrol at the moment, I have installed a 50 amp alternator that came from an 80s Patrol, coupled with an electronic voltage regulator from a Ford.

Thanks Esteban. That's what I hoped. I can't get pictures at the moment but the VW has a 120Amp alternator. The main output goes straight to the battery and starter motor. There are two small wires out - one goes to the ECU and the other I'm not sure. SO it looks like the alternator has a built in voltage regulator.

On the G60 I have two small wires from the alternator. Both go to different places on the fuse box.

So I assume I just rewire the VW Alt output (or battery) to the fuse box.

If I don't use the G60 Alt wires which means the voltage regulator won't get any input so in effect it has been deleted. The Alt Meter on the gauges gets its inputs from the voltage regulator so that will no longer work.

The Alt meter is connected all the time to the fuse box. It will still function so it can stay there.

Definitely looks like the alternator of the VW has an internal regulator, and in all modern setups, to much bureaucracy involving the ECU in its control .

Looking forward for your progress. There's another member that was going to use the same engine as you, but he has not show up in a year.

I liked the G60s for their simplicity. The TDI motor has some much electronics I hope I don't regret my decision!
