Well taking the G60 (Hellpatrol) to Stockton beach on the weekend of the 30th Jan 2010. You may remember we took the 73 there in late 2009.

Last weekend I was looking at putting the 33” BFG AT from the GU on HP (285/75/16) After looking at the rear tray I decided not to. I only have 130mm between the tyres and tray currently and 150mm upward wheel travel to the bump stop.
The 33” will add 12mm diam to the current wheel and I need at least 50mm more height on the tray, or lower bump stop by 50 or get a suspension lift. Since I removed the LPG tank I can almost slide a spare wheel under the tray.

Have decided to lift the tray 3” which can easily done, as the current setup used shaped hardwood along the chassis rails. Then there is a 2” square tube which bolts up tp the alloy tray with some channel. The tray is held on by a huge square U bolt clamp at the front each side and 4 bolts each side at the rear. I just need to install the 3” x 2” steel tube or wood between wexisting wood and tube and I’m done.

Will do a quick install this weekend as tray will come of again to
1- Install a spare G60 fuel tank behind the diff.
2- Install a flat bench so I can slide two spare wheels up under the tray
3- Also install a dual battery behind the existing battery under the left side of the tray
4- Maybe also squeeze a water tank in somewhere as well.
This will mean for Simpson I have 160L of fuel and two spares and dual battery all tucked away.

Well have started swapping my GU wheels across and she looks MEAN

Just need to undo the two front U bolts and the tray will be lifted this weekend. then i will be ready to show off these yota's next weekedn at Stockton

To shagged to write as been working all day in 40 degree heat (110 F). Taken tray off, installed 4" lift using 50 x 100mm hardwood. Have lowered it back on top and about 90% their. Big southerly just hit and had to pack up. Just need to take the fuel filler off again and continue lowering the tray.

The tray had wood already as this was shapped to make a flat section for the tray. I think for a tray it's OK as it's non passenger etc I wouldnt do it for a cab as I know body blocks need to be metal etc with no sharp corners etc. I do want metal in there later when I take it back off for the 2nd fuel tank, relocate the exhuast and make tray for 2 wheels.

There are actually no rules specifically regarding the building of home made trays by the RTA.

However all vehicle ADRs such as light emmitence angles apply as well as the need to use sound engineering practises and rules regarding the maximum sizes of the vehicle.

Another two hours and all done this morning !! Better still before the rain . Just need to make a battery clamp or something and fix the fuel filler bracket, just need a flat bar 100mm long.

personally I reckon she looks hot now and really thinking I need to buy some alloy mags and bigger wheels, tray looks normal like where it should have been from the start. Hmmm just like looking at it now

Well as noted in the "Local 4wd" thread the battery had died on HP.

Well had a quick look today and easily worked out the issue

It appeared to be a loose radiator belt and the water pump was still going but the alternator wasnt moving.

Tightened it up and tried again, now had rubber smoke coming out. This explains the burning smell i few weeks ago and why I now have have the fire estinguisher (spelling) in teh car.

Anyhow now have a shagged bearing in the alt, which when tightened seizes, I have spares galore so will need to make a quick swap during the week.

Well been thinking about the tray on HP. After seeing a few MQ ute's dor sale with original tray, I want my tray

Also after driving it around some more and now swapping from 73 to HP. The 78 drives really really really well. Feels like it will go forever so it can stay the way it is, except for tray.

Only problem is the PO cut all the tray mounts of the chassis when the alloy tray was fitted. So now thinking I remove the tub from OJ, Make a brace up for the original mounts and cut them all off the OJ chassis with brace attached, then clean up and position on HP and weld back in.

Also reckon time to start cleaning the engine back up and install heater lines as confident this engine is good and will be ther for a few more years. Only change I wold like is power steering but relucant as want it standard.

Well my yearly roadworth is up so it's maintenance time.

Just adjusted all brake drum clearances, filed my exhuast leak with putty, checked all driveline oil levels, engine is low, degreased under the car and the engine bay and fixed the driver door door limiter.

NSW is pretty tough and simple things will prevent you getting it re-registered, but as long as you know what your doing it's quite simple. She's booked in tomorrow so should be driving again later this week,
