Hi Michael,
You need to buy a multi meter like swerve said, it will make your life a lot easier if your going to chase electrical problems. All the help you are getting is excellent but if you haven't had much to do with auto electrics it can get confusing. If you are going to keep on going you need to keep it simple and follow 1 wire at a time. It might be a good idea to get a auto electrician to have a look + they might be able to give you some pointers for when your doing electrical work in the future.
