generator/alternator

Hello all, I just purchased a 1969 Patrol KL60 and I am also facing alternator/generator problems. Any parts numbers for replacement would be much appreciated. I am about to send my original Hitachi generator off to be rebuilt but would like to install something currently available for the meantime since I am trying to rely on my Patrol for daily transportation. Can anyone help? surely some of you more experienced Patrol owners have dealt with this problem.? Also, I would like to congratulate and send a big thanks to those responsible for establishing and maintaining this board. Without this board as a resource I probably would have passed on my recent Patrol purchase. Forgive me for replying to both discussions, but the others (like Emgine/Mech) don't get much attention these days. I'll post this reply that I got from Gary concerning the Alternator: You will probably have to use the pulley off your original alternator. Your rebuild guy will know what it will fit. I thought I'd go with one of the new style alternators that has everything built in. (including the voltage regulator) Then you only have one wire to worry about and your rebuild guy can show you where to connect it. I think that just about any alternator that will physically fit your bracketry and has a shaft size to accept your pulley can be made to fit. My NAPA store has the stock alternator in the book (rubuilt I think) but I wanted to upgrade to something more powerful. Let me know what you find out. Gary Along with that, I will add that I had my alternator rebuilt because it was barely keeping the battery charged. Well, after the rebuild and a new battery, I am having the same problem where the battery is discharging overnight, but not during day use. So, I am going to go back and have it tested and ask the rebuild shop for any current replacements that will bolt in and hold the original wide pulley. I have a winch which I hope to remount in the next month or so that I am afraid will damage the system unless I get a stronger alternator as well. If I get some good news, I'll post it!

thanks xpatrolx! I replaced my alternator today and still have the same problem(s). Turns out that the alternator that was on it was not the original, surprise, surprise but still of early vintage. When I attach a voltmeter from the positive terminal to the negative terminal of the new alternator it sporadically fluctuates from 14.5 to 0.5. When I disconnect the battery while the motor is running it stalls/dies. Could my problem be the voltage regulator? After digging around in the underbelly I think I am going to do a complete rewire this winter. The fuse box is not hooked up properly and none of the instrument gauges work. Does anyone that has done this have any wiring schematics? xpatrolx, if you get a replacement part number for an internally regulated alternator that works with the pulley I would love to know what it is. If I can find one soon I will post it. TIA, shann

Shann, FYI: The Nissan Alternator number is 23100-80210, good luck getting it out of Nissan but it may help for cross reference. The following is a list of rebuilders part numbers: A.L.: 1320007 Blue Chip: 41-8322 NAPA/Lester: 14101 OEM: 23100-10600-NI 23100-10601-NI This alternator was also use on the following: (so they tell me) 1964-65 1.2ltr Nissan 410 1967-68 1.6ltr Nissan 411 1967-70 2.0ltr Nissan 310 The Voltage regulator that I found is from NAPA # STI VR121. It's a third the size of the original, solid state (no moving parts) bolts and plugs in like the original and works 10 times better. Good Luck, Gary

Gary, Thanks a bunch for the info! After thinking about it I am probably going to go with an internally regulated alternator and do away with the external voltage regulator. What model and part number was the internally regulated alternator that you found that fit? and what did you have to do for the conversion? After doing some reading it appears that you can either wire directly to the alternator and toss the old external voltage regulator or you can put in some jumpers on the external voltage regulator and keep it mounted (any pros or cons to the latter scenario?) The simplicity of doing away with the old external voltage regulator appeals to me more than soldering in jumpers on it. again thanks for any info! shann
