Ring and pinion gears

After three + years of listening to the rear end in my "69 singing so loud that I almost can't hear the radio. I'm looking for a reasonably priced source for new ring and pinion gears.(4.10:1) I have two bids so far. $595.00 and $463.00 and they're not even made of gold. For comparison I can buy a set of Ford or Chevy gears for $150.00. Does anyone out there know of a cheaper source?? I would concider a complete third member (used or new) if the seller could convince me that is was noise free. I would recommend going with an FJ-40 rear axle if you are inclined to change out the rear axle all together. I am so impressed with the way that it works that the only reason I would stick with the Patrol axle is if I was restoring a truck. There were some minor things to work out in the swap, such as getting the brake line to the other side of the axle and getting the shocks set up right. It also seems to rub on the gas tank carrier just the slightest bit when in full compression. Other than that, the axle works perfect! It rides quieter, has less chance of breakage, and you can get a locker for it fairly cheap! Plus no more worrying about brake parts nightmares...

Jeepy, I agree with you entirely. When I broke an axle a year or so ago I found a replacement axle shaft and "I bought a set of back up axle shafts". So I am locked into this axle. Thanks for the info. I'll keep it filed.
