Anyone interested in an Electronic ignition?
I spoke with Pertronix (makers of electronic ignitions to replace existing points and condensers) about an electronic ignition for the Patrol. They go by the distributor model, so I gave them that. They did not have a listing, but when I told them the P40 engine, they had a model # for that engine. Well, I ordered one (#1761) last week thru Summit Racing and tried to install it this past weekend. No go. It didn't fit. Apparently the forklift version of the P40 engine uses a slightly different distributor. Now the good news. I asked about having one made for the Patrol distributor. They said they do custom jobs. All they need is the actual distributor (I have an extra). But it aint cheap. So, I asked about having more than one made for a discounted price and the person at Pertronix said they could do that if I got at least 10 made. The more made the better the discount. Well, you are all wondering "how much" right now aren't you. The regular price of an off the shelf "Ignitor" (company name for the electronic ignition) is $72 each thru Summit racing. The custom version is slightly less than $250 each. A discounted custom version is somewhere in between (depends on how many). So, the question is, if it ran around approx $150 per unit (WAG), how many people would be SERIOUSLY interested? I would need a head count before I invested all my $$ into buying that many of them. I would only average the cost over all the people (not for profit). So if you are really serious about dumping your points and condensor, this IS the ticket. My friend at work has the "Ignitor" on his Land Rover Series II 88 and his Series II 109. He highly recommends it (not a single problem in two years so far). Go to Pertronix website to get more info. http://www.pertronix.com David

Sure, I would be interested. Sounds like a pretty good deal. If old land-rovers can have one, why not old patrols?! Good luck and let me know what works out. Thanks,Dave

I used to have a 72 240z, I swaped a electronic distributer out of a 79 280zx.I paid $40.00 from a wrecking yard.Only two wires to hook up, a positive and negative, both go to the coil. The patrol has the same diameter distributer as the Z's,but the drive coupling is different at the end.I work at a machine shop and could probably make a drive coupling to adapt it to the patrol motor.I might sell some to club members if anyone is interested.I sold my Z, so I'll have to get another distrbuter to try it. Has anyone else tried this?

Yes I would be, Ive thought of doing the same thing, but havent really done much other than that, I did however find a electronic replacement from Cranecams. for around 90 bucks. thinking about that. anyways there has to be something better than points. Hey Lookinto making one of those, and see if it works. or if anyone else has tried something similar. let us know,!!!!! later.

ELECTRONIC! Yes! I would be intrested... Under THREE conditions. 1) Will this custom one be water proof like the current one? 2) Is all the electronic contained within the distributor? Reason I ask is I too swaped out my old distributor on my old 240Z with a 260Z. But, there was an external block of electronics that went with it that I had to wire up... It has been years, but I belive that external block o electronics has been incorpeated within the modern electronic distributors? 3) Will this "custom" distrubtor use "standard" distributor caps? Or should I say standard waterproof caps? Grant

The Pertronix ignition fits 100% inside the existing distributor. I have to send them one for them to fit it to create a pattern. The existing waterproof cap and wires are unchanged. Read more about them at their website: http://www.pertronix.com/ David

So far it looks like only 3 other people are really interested. I'll talk to Pertronix and find out what they can do for only 4 sets. Maybe I can get a better estimate on price and that will help generate some interest. David
