importing a patrol

I've recently purchased a Patrol in Canada.  Its a 1983 4 door.  I'm trying to bring it down to Arizona, but was told by Nissan that they cannot give me a letter stating it meets U.S. ratings.  Has anyone imported a newer Patrol (ie post 1970) and been able to gert around this.  I first came across the Patrol in Belize C.A. where my father in law owned a '91 2 door diesel, this truck could go through anything.  The Patrol I purchased was origionally brought to Canada from the U.K. , but was able to be licensed in Alberta.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
