Powder coat frame or just POR-15 it.

Having a hard time making the decision by Sunday if I should powder coat my frame or just use POR-15, they are both very durable.

Powder coating looks very nice and last a long time, bad side is touching it up. I only have to remove leaf springs/axles and engine to powder coat, but will cost me around $350.00.

POR-15 also looks very nice and last a long time, and easier to touch up. I can paint the POR-15 on the frame the way it is, and I have 2 cans of POR-15 already.

I want to drive it when I'm done, and I'm thinking the POR-15 will be easier to touch up if needed. I have a buddy that thinks I should not drive it and put it up for auction once done. I can't do that, I want to keep it and have fun with it.

Such a dilemma.
If it's going to be a trailer queen show car with mirrors placed underneath to display the frame, powder coat it.
If your going to drive it, POR-15 it.

When I can get to my 'puter I'll post some frame pics.

It's a 4x4 and if I own something I will use it. My late Father was the type of guy to buy something and not use it. I am complete opposite, if I own something I use it, or what's the use of owning it.

How did you do your frame?

The original owner of Togo applied a heavy coat of undercoating to the whole underside of the Patrol. It was so thick that it never really dries; it stayed tacky. I finally got tired of getting the stuff all over me anytime I had to do the simplest thing like replacing a light bulb, so I decided to remove it all.

It took me three months, using mineral spirits, scotchbrite pads, plastic putty knives, wire brushes and lots of latex brushes. I ruined many clothes in the process. But underneath the undercoating was the original black paint on the frame. I even found the stickers on the diff and center cross member (don't remember what they said at the moment.) So then I repainted the frame and diffs, using Eastwood frame paint.

Here are before and after pics:

Looks good.

Mine as.well has the under coating, and I also accidentally blew off factory stickers hidden under the coating with the hot pressure washer. Mine is all clean and down to factory paint, so maybe I will just POR-15 it. Some other rebuild I have just rattle canned them so it was easy to touch up.

I'm a Rust Bullet fan myself but fairly similar products. You already have the POR so that would be an easy choice.

FYI, you can use infrared spot lighting for touch ups on powder coating. I have never done it but when I started looking at how to coat larger objects like motorcycle frames and so on, that was a decent setup as well.

Here is an example at Eastwood...

I started painting it, and just can't handle it......Im pulling the motor and powder coating it!!!!!!!!!

It is just the fact they did some real crappy welding back in the day, welds still have slag on them, plus dingle berry splatter. I would just kick myself down the road after the body is back on if I did not take a extra 3 hours of labor to powder coat the frame.
