Getting excited as off to Stockton Beach tomorrow in my 78 ute for a fun weekend in teh sand Just hanging to see how she goes with the 33" and 5 speed !! compared to the 73 with rock hard tyres which didnt deflate and the 3 speed.
Alright !!! Bring it on !!!!

The MV Sygna was a 53,000 t (52,163 long tons) Norwegian bulk carrier that ran aground during a major storm on 26 May 1974. Attempts to refloat the ship were unsuccessful. The ship broke its back and the stern now lies off Stockton Beach where it is slowly decaying in the elements. The bow section was eventually towed to Taiwan and broken up. The ship is approximately 8.8 km (5.5 mi) from the southern end of the beach and usually easily visible from the Stockton breakwall. On a clear day the ship is easily visible from both ends of the beach.
Tank Traps
Tank trap at the northern end of the beach in Anna BayWorld War II resulted in fortifications against a possible amphibious assault by Imperial Japanese forces being installed along the beach. Many of these fortifications, in the form of barbed wire entanglements and concrete pyramid shaped blocks, commonly known as tank traps, may be seen along the beach. Some of the tank traps from the northern end of the beach have been removed and relocated to near the parking area at Birubi Point in Anna Bay while most from the southern end of the beach may be found outside Fort Wallace in Stockton. Some of the tank traps remain submerged and pose a hazard to swimmers.
Tin City or Silver City
During the Great Depression of the 1930s a group of squatters constructed a series of tin shacks at the site which is approximately 11 km (6.8 mi) south west of Anna Bay. During World War II the shacks were torn down to make way for an Army camp but were rebuilt after the war was over. Today, 11 of the shacks, known collectively as Tin City, remain but no new shacks may be built. Nor can existing shacks be rebuilt if they are destroyed by the elements. Tin City was used for several scenes in the 1979 movie Mad Max
Sabre
Stockton Beach is less than 3.5 km (2.2 mi) from RAAF Base Williamtown and is subjected to many overflights by both RAAF and civilian aircraft. On 10 February 1960 a CAC CA-27 Sabre from RAAF Base Williamtown crashed on the beach after overshooting its approach. The pilot was killed The remains of this aircraft appear from time to time.

Saturday went well and I was crusing up to Stockton at nice highway speeds of 110km (Wink) and quite impressed with the 5 speed. I was working her hard (really hard
) so 165km, 34Litres, 20.6 l?100km or 17.2 MPG
Collected some firewood before arrival at the Lavis Lane Servo and got mauled by some mosquitos. We all aired down and then just as we took off I noticed Charlies GQ with tyres which looked a little to baggie, Charlie said they were 18psi, but when checked they were 8 psi . Just a little low.
Anyhow we decided to follow Gibbo’s GPS markers to the Sabre Wreck, which didn’t exist, sand blown over. Then to Tin City, see photos above. I’ve been to that beach many times and never seen it, also missed it. Then the Tank traps etc. After all that then to ship wreck and setting up camp, swim drinks, swim, drinks, drinks, food, drinks, drinks, fire, drinks, fire, drinks, sleep, you get the idea 8)
By late Saturday afternoon I started getting a buzzing noise from the gearbox. As the noise still occurred with the clutch in, isolating the gearbox I’m confident that squealling clutch throwout bearing from a few months back, is starting to tell me to get stuffed and take him out.
Well after a late night and waking up to pi$$ing rain we had brekkie, packed up camp. I decided to try and place a little grease from underneath on the gearbox input shaft to help the bearing. hELPED FOR A WHILE BUT but after a bit longer was back, now have a buzzing sound almost permantley.
So after leaving camp we headed south looking for the old army firing range, had some good plays and after flogging the 78 a little to hard she started coughing and spluttering and not really idling. My 1st thought was over heated as still running water (had coolant onboard) anyhow decided to install coolant as had no more water leaks after Xmas.
The boys went for a 4wd and 30 min later she was still bad. Decided to head out as at higher revs she was still ok, was starting to think I had a timing issue, or something else.
After getting out and driving 15km on tar to a servo she was still crap. Checking over the plugs and leads, it seemed No 1 Cylinder spark plug was bad, we sent Ed of to get a new plug , started her up and she was good. But after driving 2km was crap again, so still heat related
Drive back on the freeway was stinking hot in the P powered heater, really have to love Mr Nissan for not putting insulation in and a cast iron motor playing heater, better still in 30 degree temps, just wonderfull.
Drove 1 hour on the freeway, stopped and engine still absolute crap, drove another hour back to Sydney and guess what ???? she was OK ? Temp guage was now around just under half, seems before it was just above half and my dramas continued.
I will post another post soon but remember Ross also had heating issues last Stockton trip, my 73 had heating issues last Stockton trip and now this weekend in the 78
Ute is now cleaned and driving fine except for the buzzing clutch throwout bearing and better still my rear shackles have loosened up and no longer squeaking !!! Much better over bumps
