If it works, then perhaps there will another Ebay listing showing up in the next few weeks- for a working, original points distributor with the twist on wire caps

I won't risk with this one. The picture doesn't match, and the title of the listing either.

I will just get the P40 distributor and down the line install the Pertronix kit.

Well, it is from JC Whitney, so you know they should have a decent return policy. And the item pictured is not always the item you will be getting. Notice that it also fits 620s and 720s, which are 4 bangers. So that tells me they send you the correct one for your application/vehicle.

Ok, I'm 99% certain I pulled the trigger too fast on this one. Luckily, JCWhitney has free return shipping, so this is a no-lose deal for me (minus time and inconvenience)

The part number in the Ebay listing title is a valid Pertronix distributor part number.... for a 4 cylinder English BMC engine.

I think the cross-reference snafu is due to the fact that some BMC's from the 60's also used Hitachi distys

So, I expect to receive a disty with a 4-cylinder cap next week, and I expect to send it right back....


Pertronix does have two electrinic conversion modules in their catalog that will replace the 60 Patrol's points, and are programmed with the correct timing curve:

1763LS is the Ignitor series module

91763LS is the Ignitor II series module (same as above, with a couple additional features like better cold start assistance, and constant, nonvariable dwell, etc...)

Well poo. The listing sure is adamant that the dizzy fits the Patrols. Guess the seller needs a bit of educating. My bad for not checking first.

The Pertronix kit is a very nice enhancement for the Patrol. People that have installed them love the improvement. I actually enabled Pertronix to build the kit - I took a dizzy to them. They're only about 20 miles away. Now you say they have added an improved model, that's cool!

The 1763LS is for the waterprotect dizzy with three screws holding the cap to body. The clip type cap on dizzy is the non-waterprotect type.
You may get lucky and it might the text is correct but.....

Distributor came today... 4 cylinder British BMC engine (as I suspected)

Return label in hand- back to the Fedex store tomorrow morning.

This weekend I'll pull my WP distributor and take a good look, and if the shaft looks good then I'll just order the Pertronix module, some new wires, and the 45KV coil to convert it myself.

and since others might someday find this thread in a future search for electronic ignition- I'm going to make the important note that anyone who has the original spark plug wires on their 60 model Patrol (like I do) might want to replace them with non-metal carbon core plug wires if they upgrade to the Pertronix electronic ignition -Pertronix does not recommend solid core wires with their modules. A lot of folks online say they have done it without issues, but it only takes one amperage spike on one pulse to fry the module, so I personally won't take the risk.

Sorry to have steered you wrong on that. The listing was pretty misleading.
