Adjusted my valves this evening

Won't run? Engine, cooling system, fuel pump, carb, clutch, tranny, brakes, etc. The old messages from the NPCA 'Engine & Mechanical' category are here.

Adjusted my valves this evening

Post by moore_rb »

WOW.

immediately after turning the key- that's all I could say... wow.

ever since I first got this rig running, it has had a very noisy valve train... like diesel engine noisy. So this evening we finally had some overcast and lower temps outside, so I went ahead and warmed the engine up, pulled the valve cover and adjusted all the rockers to .016. Several of them had a ton of slop that needed to be adjusted out.

Then I put the valve cover back on, put the plugs back in, fired it up, and...

wow.

Silent. It sounds like a gas engine again. Throttle response felt better, and it revs a lot more smoothly.

I get so excited over the simplest little things sometimes ...

That poor Patrol really must have had a bunch of monkeys working on it before. I sure hope it appreciates the expert attention it's getting now. ;)

How do you adjust the slop? Might you have any photos?

Sorry- no pics of the procedure. It was pretty late (and dark) by the time I was done- I had to put it all back together with the shop lights shining on it.

However, the process is pretty simple- all you need is a medium flathead screw driver, a .016 feeler guage, and a 9/16 or 15mm box end wrench.

once the engine is warmed up, shut it off, remove the valve cover and spark plugs, and turn it by hand until number one cylinder is at top dead center. You can find TDC by either removing the distributor cap and turning the engine until the rotor is pointing to where the number one spark plug wire would be, or you can do what I do and just hold your finger over the number one spark plug hole and turn the engine until you feel the air pressure of the compression stroke pushing against your finger and watching for both of the rockers on the number one cylinder to stop moving- as soon as they are level, and not moving anymore, you are on the base circle of the cam and can safely adjust the valves.

With the number one cylinder at TDC, and starting from the front of the engine, you can now adjust valves number 1,2,3,6, 8 and 9 ( credit Esteban for this sequence)

Loosen the lock nut on the driver's side of the rocker arm until it is up near the top of the adjusting screw. Then, set the feeler guage on the passenger side of the rocker arm between the stem of the valve and the head of the rocker arm. Slowly turn the adjusting screw down until the rocker snugs down on the feeler guage, then back it off SLIGHTLY until you can slide the feeler guage between the rocker and the valve easily, but still "feel" it contacting both surfaces. hold the set screw steady in this position with the screwdriver while you lock the nut back down snugly with the wrench. after the nut is snug, double check that the feeler guage stll slides between the valve and the rocker arm without too much friction.

wash, rinse repeat 5 more times.

once the 6 valves listed above are done, turn the engine until cyclinder 6 is at TDC, and repeat the process above on valves number 4,5,7,10,11, and 12.... button the valve cover back on, plug your spark plugs back in, and enjoy the melodious symphony of a quieter, smoother running Patrol.

Piece of cake.

:) Let's hope it appreciates it enough to give me years/decades of trouble free service once it's ready to hit the road.

Sure, I'm leaving the house now- be there in 6 and a half hours... ;)

none of my valve stems had any signs of mushrooming, and all of the rocker arm ends were still nice and round as well .

But I'll tll ya, I bet a couple of them had a full 1/16 inch of gap...

maybe the "monkeys" who had been working on it thought that .016 translated into 1/16th...?
