Black trim pieces...?

Ok, I see pics of quite a few early 60 Patrols with the black front grill, black headlight rings, door grabs, etc...

was the blacked out trim an original option? Or are a bunch of owners out there just doing a big Dream Car Garage styling copy-cat exercise...?

The black-out trend was custom, not a factory option.
