How-to: Convert to Pertronix electronic ignition

This step by step shows how I converted my 22100-c7000 distributor from points to electronic using the Pertronix Ignitor II kit #91762.

You can also use Pertronix Ignitor kit(s) 1761 or 1762, or Ignitor II kit 91761

The only difference between the 1761 kits and the 1762 kits is the size of one of the holes on the base plate (more details below).

These steps below would also be very similar if you were converting an original Water Protection distributor using the Pertronix 1763ls or 91763ls kit(s).

Here is the assortment of parts after I unpacked them:

The distributor itself can be ordered from Helmar (search on "Helmar" and you'll find several links to the product page):

First step is to unclip and remove the cap:

Then pop off the rotor, being mindful of the small metal clip that is used to keep the rotor snug on the distributor shaft (if the clip pops out, just press it back into the socket on the rotor:

Next, remove the two screws that hold the point assembly to the base plate and remove the points:

And remove the two small screws that hold the condensor on the side of the distributor - keep the small white clip that fits in the slot on the distributor body, we'll reuse that later.

Here is everything all laid out after dissassembly:

I should mention that there is a step in the Pertronix instructions to machine a flange on the distributor shaft, but my shaft had no such flange, so I skipped right over this step.

Now it's time to unpack your ignition module:

Here is where we get to the part where the 1762 and 91762 kits differ from the 1761 and 91761. The distributor has a small alignment knob on the baseplate that I am pointing to here with the screwdriver:

And this pin does not align perfectly with the hole in the baseplate on the 1762 and 91762 ignition modules:

So what I did was simply take my die grinder (you could also use a drill) to enlarge this hole until it was large enough to fit over the alignment knob on the distributor baseplate. I mounted the igntion module using the 2 replacement screws from the kit, making sure that the tapered flat screw went in the chamfered mounting hole(Also remember to re-connect the little ground wire) Do not tighten the screws all the way- get them seated, but leave some play in the ignition module plate:

Next, press the reluctor magnet wheel over the step cam on the distributor shaft- The directions do not tell you which way to press it on, so look inside the ring- it should be pressed on with the little flat facets at the top:

After pressing on the reluctor wheel, set the supplied clear gap guage between the wheel and the ignition module. Lightly squeeze the guage between the wheel and the module while you finish tightening the mounting screws:

Now we need to run the two wires. What I did was re-use the little white clip that came with the distributor- there is already a hole in the clip that you can push the wires through, but you have to cut the terminals off the wires first:

Then you can press the wires through the clip, and slide the clip back into the slot on the distributor body, and pull the wires into position behind the ignition module. After you have the wires positioned, you will want to twist the distributor baseplate against the centrifugal springs a couple times to make sure that the wires are not getting crimped, and to make sure that they are not interfering with the timing advance system:

Now you can press the rotor back on and re-install the cap (be sure to remove and toss out that clear gap guage first :) :

And crimp some new terminals onto the ends of the wires (I was out of eyelet connectors, so I used forks with a little shrink wrap):

If you are using the Pertronix coil ( I bought the 45,000 volt model)- you can make it look more original by peeling off the sticker (but BEWARE all you California Patrolers- the CARB (California Air Research Board) exemption number is located on this sticker, and California law says that ANY non-OEM powertrain part used on a street driven vehicle in California must have this CARB certification number, and removing the CARB number is a violation of California law- so if you peel this sticker off your Pertronix coil, then congratulations- you're a criminal. :twisted:

The Pertronix coil slides right into the stock coil bracket:

And that's it- the only thing left is to install the distributor and coil in your Patrol, and install a set of NON METAL CORE spark plug wires. (I'll have to post a pic of mine installed in the Patrol tomorrow morning- I ran out of light this evening)

Great How-to - thanks for doing this! :clap: :clap: :clap: The steps are pretty much the same for the Pertronix kit in the water-protect distributor.

One suggestion: could you use img links instead of album links so the pics display full size? It's a little distracting to page back and for while following the steps. Just a thought. :think:

Today I ran and drove the red patrol with the electronic conversion and I must say- it is running damn near tip-top. I even chirped the tires a little bit :auto-layrubber:

I still need to address the noisy water pump bearing, and get the brakes sorted out, But I rebuilt the carbs on both Patrols today, and got the fuel and spark systems all dialed in. Both of them are running really smooth...

Does anyone have a preference for the 1763 v. 91763 (Ignitor v Ignitor2) for the WP distributor conversion?
River - it seems you have done the swap.

The Pertronix website lists the following differences:
Adaptive dwell control
High rpm timing correction
Start up boost
Reverse polarity and over current protection
Low resistance coil compatibility

I am concerned about the interaction of the timing advance of the distributor and the high rpm timing correction of the Pertronix. Will they combine to over-advance, will the Pertronix override the dizzy advance?
The mechanic (bandit) that looked at my distributor said the original WP advance mechanism was loose and prone to random advance and, if true, I wonder if the Pertronix will cure it or compound it. Or, if the WP advance is beyond repair, should I just remove the WP and replace with a fork truck distributor.

Also, what i assume was originally a vacuum line from the dizzy to the air filter was capped at both places by the PO - is that a problem? Should I reconnect?

Also, also and related, I have seen conflicting descriptions of the advance mechanism of the WP distributor - is it vacuum, centrifugal, or vacuum+centrifugal?

So many questions for such a simple truck.

I have a Pertronix kit on a non-WP distributor, and only the Ignitor type. At the time of the purchase, the Ignitor 2 was not available for me. Being the Patrol engine a low rpm, that max out at around 3800 rpms, my guess is that the benefits will be marginal (adaptive dwell control). But being price wise very similar, why not go for the Ignitor 2.

The advance mechanism is both centrifugal and vacuum actuated. If the vacuum advance is loose, the Pertronix will not correct it, neither will compound it in my opinion.

I'm not a purist, and my Patrol came originally without a WP distributor, and the one that I have right now is a couple of iterations better than the original one, which was probably equal to the WP. So my guess is that you'll benefit with the newer type (sold for fork lift engines). Also, what are the chances that you'll be fording a stream that will cover the distributor?

While I was typing this I went back and looked at pictures of your Patrol. You already have a different brake master cylinder installed... go for the aftermarket distributor.

The only benefit I see with the Ignitor 2 is that it works with coils rated up to 60kV, which would allow you to run a wider spark plug gap (maybe .005 wider) which could improve your combustion efficiency somewhat... Of course, to take advantage of this means you would have to buy a new coil, as well...

The adaptive dwell control is not going to have any effect (neither positive nor negative) on the Patrol's engine.

So, The overall effects would probably be marginal, but like Esteban says, the Ignitor2 package is not that much more, so why not... 8-)

Thank you so much for outlining this conversion. We are giving it a full go for 63 named CCV5. We ordered from Ebay suppliers the following:

Petronix Flame Thrower III - 45,000 volt coil Part # 44011
Petronix Igniter II - Part # 91762
Petronix Solid State Circuit - Part # 1763LS

The only troubling thing is that JEGS, supplier of Igniter II gave no information on the kit's contents. With a bit more time I could have researched it from their website.

Please correct me if I have left anything out.

Just a few more notes after discussions with JEGS.

A). The Nissan OEM distributor will work, if the bushings and shaft are tight.
B). Modern spark plug wires are required, no solid wiring...braided or multiple wires per connection are required.
C). The only required item is the Igniter II #91762, the coil and other items are optional.
D). Item #91762 includes the solid state circuit item I listed above as item 1763LS, so delete this if you buy the kit Ron mentioned, #91762

Sorry for the confusion and I hope this clarifies any misdirection I might have caused.

I just did this conversion on the water-protect distributor of my '69 a couple of months ago. I didn't replace anything. The plugs are NGK BP6ES, the plug wires are stock, and the coil is a common 12v internal resistor coil. I simply pulled out the points and the wire from the distributor to the coil and installed the kit per the instructions.
