Horns!!

Anyone know anything bout how the horns work on these things and how to trouble shoot/fix them. The ones I have look great on the inside but they seem not to work, atleast when I tried to hook it up to a battery nothing happened. I hooked the wire tab to the + and grounded the housing and nothing. Any suggestions??

I'm not much of a electrician so stupid question, does it need the relay to work? Can I not just test it off a battery?

Yes, the horn should work if you provide power directly to it. How are you grounding it? It is possible that your horn is just bad. I've had that happen on my '69. I replaced them with a set from the parts store that were much louder.

The horn on my '69 is intermittent at best....every blue moon it will just start going off while driving. Took apart the assembly and can't tell what the issue is? Am I missing a part, possible studs that make the connection with the retaining ring? Could not locate a good schematic of the steering wheel to see what if anything I was missing. I cleaned the ring and re-assebled, but still not working. I tested the horns themselves and they are functional.

Appears I am missing the large spring, what's odd is that there is a small spring located at the 10:30 position that does give some tension to the ring....not sure what's going on.

I had the same problem on my '69 with that same style horn. I replaced the 3 o'rings at the retaining screws and it fixed the problem.

The missing large spring would definitely cause the problem also.

What purpose does this smaller spring play? (arrow in pic) Also, are the circled O-rings what you replaced? Do you remember what you found to use in their place?

What is the actual surface connection that sounds the horn?
