Tub removal
Hi all, got some nasty rust where the tub starts behind the front seats. It's the section you can see if you peer in behind the battery and looks as if it's eaten from one side to the other.
I'm thinking the only way to fix it is remove the tub and weld in a new section. Does the tub come off seperate or is the body all one piece to the firewall?

Re: Tub removal
Hi welcome,
The tub is bolted to the chassis with bolts both rear corners, in the centre of rear bar above a tow hitch, then two bolts just behind the B pillars .
The Tub connects to the floor pan by many bolts behind your seats. It's not to hard to pull apart but will still be a project as things happen. Any chance of photos or any chance of fixing it on a hoist ?

Re: Tub removal
It was fairly simple... but if you have rust showing through, figure on dealing with broken and rusted bolts... You will also need to use a sharp knife to cut through the caulking and seam seal that is installed at the factory during construction at the floor/seat section flange to the tub.......
Here is a picture that shows the tub loosened and ready to pull off the frame. You will have to remove the bolts along the flange of the floor/seat section and the 4 main bolts that attach the tub to the frame. Make sure that you save save the rubber pads that the bed sits on so you can either find new ones that match the same height or to reuse them... That way the floor/seat section and the tub will be installed at the same elevation and the door lines and the joints all line up correctly....

Re: Tub removal
Thanks all
Jeff, I see from your pic that your panel at the front of the tub is bigger than mine (I've got panel envy
) is that a SWB thing or maybe mine has been cut down as it's flush with the back box section. Here's some pics
I was actually wondering if anyone has cut and shut this panel to give more room to push the seats back. While I love this Patrol I remember my '71 seemed much more roomier (had the original seats), this one has my legs bumping into the steering wheel (I'm 6ft 2") and is generally uncomfortable with the gearstick sitting against my thigh.
I'm looking at making up some mounts to lift & fit the seats out of my Series 1 Discovery to allow for a bit more leg room but putting that panel back 8" would make a world of difference.
Has it been done that anyone knows of?

Re: Tub removal
Hi Swerve, here's some rust pics. Might be able to do it on a hoist but would have to take out the after-market bracket for the 2nd fuel tank (which is currently camoflaging a lot of the rust and might come in handy to get it through rego quickSwerve wrote:Hi welcome,

Re: Tub removal
It does appear that your tub has been modified to allow those non-stock seats to recline. The seats are also the reason for your lack of leg room. They may have been (somewhat) comfortable in the vehicle they were designed for, but they have too much depth for the Patrol. Stock Patrol seats are shallower.
Beyond any hope for intervention

Re: Tub removal
Shallow?.
. I'd say almost non existent shallow on the bottom..not much padding... the shallow stance makes you sit much lower than the seats that you have... I have seen pictures of a vehicle that had the tub cut and the seat perch cut all the way down to the floor which then allowed a taller seat to be installed and moved to the appropriate location away from the steering wheel...Much metal work and lots of time... you would end up having to weld the floor section and the tub to be a single unit.... But if you have lots of time and money.... Wouldn't be stock at all of course...

Re: Tub removal
Hi Sorry to dig up old treads, but is it possible to lift the whole body off in one go, I understand removing shifted, wiring to starters and other engine components, and also remove the steering Colum. Also how many people would it take to remove it ? Is for my 66 G60
