Potential 1980 G60 owner

Post by vwgary »

Good afternoon fellow enthusiasts/addicts  My name is Gary, originally from the US but we retired to Ecuador last April and love it here. We currently own a Chevy Luv 4X4 4door pick up but want to "get back to basics". I worked at a Datsun dealership in New Hampshire for a couple years in the late 60's and plowed lots with a G60 so I had been around them. Fast forward 45 years and we find ourselves looking at an 80 G60. Like another poster, we intend to do some travelling around South America and my biggest concern is parts availability. My goal would be to purchase and carry parts for non-catastrophic roadside repairs. You're experienced input would be greatly appreciated. There are currently 2 1980 G60's available but they are a 12 hour drive away. Would like to find one closer to home :D

Welcome to 60Patrol! :text-welcomewave: Wow! A Datsun dealership in New Hampshire in the '60s?! It must have been one of the first ones. :D

Esteban is from Ecuador. He'll chime in soon with the lowdown on parts there. I know there are sources there.
Beyond any hope for intervention

Thanks for the welcome :D Looking about I'd seen Esteban mentioned so I hope he replies. Our concern isn't for the G60's ability, they are legendary, but as mentioned, parts availability.

The dealer was Bourque in Manchester, NH. They were a Peugeot dealer as well. I was a lot boy during high school so I got to drive all of the early Datsun stuff

Thanks,
Gary

Welcome aboard Gary. Yes you have to be an addict to spend hard-earned money on 30-plus year old gas guzzling sacrificial anodes like we do.

Welcome Gary!

You've done the opposite of me. I'm from Ecuador and moved to the States.

Beware that the last year that G60 Patrols were imported to Ecuador was 1979. Regarding parts, extremely difficult since the Nissan dealership, AYASA, decided around 1990 to not bring any more parts for that model.

You can still get aftermarket parts for the engine, clutch, bearings, seals. For used parts about the only place will be the small town os San Gabriel, about 3-4h driving time from Quito. But since over there Patrols were used as commercial transportation, they did up to a lot of miles and a number of rebuilds on the engines.

Where are you located now?

I can put you in contact with one of our members from Ecuador, Pancho, or my brother.

PM me with your email.

Thanks for all the welcomes :D If we do follow thru with a purchase I'm sure I'll be picking the collective brain! I was mistaken as I thought both G60's in Quito were 80's. One is a 76.

PM requests sent :D

Thanks,
Gary

We're still in the decision making mode of this purchase. If we do this we decided we'd need a second vehicle to use should the Patrol be down for any length of time waiting on parts.

Only pic of the 76 we're currently looking into.
