how strong?

O.k. my friends have arranged a 4x4 expedetion on clayton O.K.. My 69 patrol is all stock. minus 31 inch tires and about a four inch shackel lift. The vehicles i am going with are mostly cherokees, nissan trucks, and bronco II's they all have 5 to seven inch suspension lifts and all have 33 to 35 inch tires. Am I waisting my time and fuel by trailering my KL60 ? What can i expect out of a pretty stock patrol ? Will i just get laughed at?

Well, your weak point may be your shackle lift - depending on how you did it. But, from first hand experience I can tell you that I have had my TOTALLY stock Patrol, complete with original flat springs and 29" tires, out with large groups of very built jeeps on Black Diamond (Very Difficult) trails, and did at least as good as all of them. Some swore I had lockers - I just grinned. From what I know of OK, you don't have the mountainous terrain that we have here in So Cal, more on the mud side. I really couldn't say how these things do in the mud, but I can say that once you put it 4 low and just let out the clutch it will climb anything! This last weekend I was asked to 'keep an eye on' the Liberty that was behind us because they were having more trouble than I was. We did have to hang back and spot them a few times. I've been very proud of what my Patrol has gotten me through lately. Not only getting me up and down the mountain (to a 7000' foot elevation, 45 miles each way) but I haven't found a trail yet that the ugly old beast couldn't handle.

Sounds like your Patrol is about like mine was set up last year. You will be shocked at how well it will perform. My Patrol is a legend amongst our 4-wheelin club, which consists of:1970 Scout 800A- 304 V8, 31"s, no lift1976 Scout II-304 V8 36's, 6" lift1976 Scout II- 345 V8 35's 6" lift1980 Scout II 304 V8, 44's ungodly amounts of lift and air bags1978 Jeep CJ-7 Vortec 327 V8 33's, unknown coil springs lift1967 Kaiser-Jeep M715 230 I-6 40's, 8" lift1981 Chevy K10 350 V8, 35's 6" lift1977 Chevy K5 350 V8, 33's no lift1983 Chevy K5 350 V8 33's 6" lift1985 Chevy K5 350 V8 35's 6" lift1989 Ford F-150 Ext. Cab 302 V8 31's no liftAnd the Patrol keeps up with them all!!

My opinion is, and always has been, that it is not necessarily the vehicle that makes the difference, but rather the driver skill. If you are confident in your skills and have driven your Patrol enough to become familar with it, then you will likely do well. I too have taken my Patrol places that lifted Jeeps, Cruisers and Scouts could go and did just as well as they did, if not better. There are several things that you really have going for you with the Patrol. The first is wheelbase. You are much shorter than most of the other vehicles going with you. Second is that you can take the top and doors off. This gives you a much better view of obstacles and allows you to maneuver a different line through obstacles if the windshield is down. Along with this same theme, the third advantage would be that you would have a lower center of gravity. Even with the top and doors on, you still probably have a lower center of gravity. It will benefit you in off-camber situations. Best of luck and let us know how it goes!
