clutch

Post by G60michael »

Hi all, the clutch in the 77 ute grabs and doesn't slip.

However the pedal only builds up slight pressure a few inches from the floor not from the top, its grinds into gear and grind going into the other gears, I feel the slave or master seals are buggered and wont allow pressure on pedal all the way, any ideas

It might need adjusting. The adjustment is at the end of the rod that comes out of the slave cylinder.

please, do you screw the rod in or out? mine will grind shifting gears, after it is driven a few miles.

I think it gets screwed in. It's been a while since I looked at one. Here's the page from the '78 Service Manual:

So if you bled the system, are you certain the clutch master and or slave is not leaking ? has the fluid level on the clutch master moved ?

Personally sounds like the clutch still isnt bled correctly, when you push the clutch in , how far is the slave moving ??????

Hi Michael,
If you have bled it already try peeling the rubber boot back on the slave cylinder(where the rod comes out) and see if it is damp inside, if it is damp inside it could be sucking air. If you need to adj the clutch to reduce free travel you need to disconnect return spring at the slave cylinder, crack the lock nut on the rod and screw push rod in until you have no free travel then back it off so you have about 3mm free travel, tighten lock nut , reattach spring. Make sure you have free travel or clutch will slip. Other things to check are pedal height and make sure all linkages are free, greased up and bushes not flogged out. If you have to start playing with pedal height adj everything back to specs, you don't know who's played with it before you got it.

Took off Slave today and found it quite rusty inside. It looks like the piston only moves 5mm or so going by the streak marks in the bore.

Also the bleed nipple is stripped half way along the thread which still screws in but is dickey.

What's the Verdict ? Any Help needed ASAP, as if i need a new slave, can order tomorrow and have here probably overnight.
