1977 LWB G60 Trayback

Post by G60michael »

Hi everyone, this is the newest g60 to the fleet. It is a 1977 G60 Tray back farm ute.
I was told about this G60 late last year when my mates spotted it in a paddock, they went in and spoke to the owner, got me some contact details, and i followed it up.

Having not seen it before, bar a few pictures my mates sent me, i couldnt really determine its true condition, it had visible rust in the windscreen and guards, but only saw photos of the outside, so i figured its probabably rotten inside as well.

A couple of weekends ago, Myself and Neil headed out with a trailer to tow the old ute back to my place. Took a bit to get it onto the trailer, but we got it on.
The Owner before me got the G60 after he done some work at the local Golf Club, and was offered it about 5 years ago, there was more golf tee's inside the cab than the golf club.

I have a strong feeling that originally this G60 was a Bush Fire, Forestry, NPWS or mining truck, as there is a unusual sticker on the seat box.
Ever Since he had it it was a paddock basher. My mates told me it apparently had a starter motor problem, but turns out that the owner took the earth bolt out as the kids were using it to ski behind in the swamp.

Anyway enough talking, now lets get started on the old girl.

The Engine is all original, looks fairly clean compared to some out there. The original Hitatchi VHA carburettor is still bolted to the manifold, it was slightly leaking around the base, but has since fixed that issue. Its seems to run and operate pretty well which is a bonus. I will get some Carby cleaner and give it a through clean.
Someone's fitted some sparkplug leads recently, the radiator still was full when i got it, wich was a good sign.

As like most other aussie g60's , there is a set of landcruiser split rims bolted onto each corner, there pretty warn out, but do have some tread left. The front diff hadnt been looked after, and realised the wheel bearings were never kept greased up, the Diff was noisy, and the wheel bearings collapsed. The original diff still had the factory drive flanges, which you dont see all that much any more.

Image

There is another diff bolted into the front now, thanks to neil for the diff. A set of Warn Locking hubs are fitted, and work ok, No bearing slop or noise which is what i like to see. It had a snapped drivers spring when i got it, but i removed the springs and all from neils wreck, which killed 2 birds with one stone. The Front springs are sagged as like most other g60's.

When i picked it up the cab was full of cobweb's, Golf tee's, beer bottles and a few hand tools.
Someone had fitted some aftermartket seats, there comfortable, but sit a tad higher i think. Does anyone know what these seats are from, as there the same type as whats fitted into the 72.

Image

The Passenger seat wouldnt allow access to the battery area as it was to high andhit the windscreen, so i repaced it with an original seat.
The padded dash, is cracking from the sun, but apart from that the inside isnt overy bad condition, with only mainly surface rust.

It still has the orignal nissan G60 seatbelts fitted, in pretty good condition, they look like they havent been used in a long time, and the original nissan key was still in the ignition.

There is a fairly good bullbar on the front, its welded to the chassis though. Its still got the original tow hook on the front aswell.
Image

RYCO Oil Filters sticker on the window, its obviously had some servicing in its time.

This is the unusual sticker on the seat box, i strongly think its was a Fire Truck, NPWS, forestry before it went to the golf course, as i figure a golf course maintenance ute wouldn't require a custom body.

And yet another addition to Micheal's Aussie Patrol farm. :D That has got to be the most creative hood I have ever seen on any vehicle.

If you end up parting it out that VHA carb is exactly what I am looking for. ;)

From the colour mate I would guess ex fire truck, tray however does not look remotely like a quick response unit one so would guess it was probably put on when the ute was retired from fire duty. Around here the colour of most fire trucks prior to orange becoming the standard colour was a darkish green, and most fire trucks had a sticker of the crown or england with flames under it I think......

Thanks Limited slip, yes strongly believe its an ex RFS Truck, Its got 2 white stripes on the roof. All G60's appear to have factory fitted steel built trays, the Fire Department obviously fitted there required body to the tray or fitted a custom one by D&S, then when retired from fire duty, they removed the custom tray, and fitted a non-stock aluminium tray.

The Plans are for this old ute to drive it and work it on the property.

Yes catching river slowly, would of been closer if I didn't scrap the 77 and sell the 79

The Old Girl has been getting a serious work out the last couple of weeks, while we are clearing out the majority of scrub in one of the back paddocks.

Been Pulling out Stumps, Logs, Lantana you name it and the old girl is still running like a champion, with a few more dints and a broken passenger door handle (Side swiped a tree gently)

However Decided to run really rough yesterday afternoon after pulling out more logs, Opened up the bonnet and fuel pumping into the carby while not running and leaking out onto the manifold, having petrol leaking onto a hot exhaust isn't the ideal thing, so I ripped of the fuel line to the VHA inlet, undone the needle and seat and it was clogged pretty bad. Washed it out and the inlet strainer with a bottle of Coca-Cola in the tray and bingo going like a champion again.

These G60 Tray backs are so Practical for this farm use, I need to persuade my old man to get a few G60 Tray backs for himself now
