60Patrol

Hi All,

I have been trying lately to get my patrol running again after a long time sitting in the shed. Im having trouble getting the engine to run though. I have a stromberg carb on the patrol engine and it wont idle.
If i pump the trottle fast and continuously, it will run but it will scream at really high revs. As soon as i stop pumping the throttle it dies.
The same happens if i pull the choke all the way. With the choke fully on it will run but screaming at high revs. As soon as i let the choke off it dies.

At first i thought maybe something was wrong with the carbeurettor. I had just had it re-built and thought maybe it was clogged or something. I took it back to the carbeurettor specialist and he put it on a test engine and it ran perfectly.
His suggestion was an airleak under the carbeurettor, maybe manifold gasket between manifold/carb or manifold/engine block. I have checked all of these and replaced them all, still no good. All the fuel lines and break booster lines are brand new so i cannot find any air leaks.

but i dont believe the carb is the problem as ive seen it run perfectly on another engine (it was some holden engine a liitle smaller than the patrol engine)

Im at a lost here and its driving me mad!

Sure sounds like inadequate fuel. Can you check pump pressure as you try to run it?
The test-engine pump may have a considerably higher pressure than yours, which affects the float level, and thus mixture. You also say you've replaced manifold gaskets and hoses. Can you try temporally capping off those vacuum ports? It's possible for vacuum boosters to develop internal leaks.

I think you have a vacuum leak. Best thing to do here is start the engine and make it idle or run. If you have a stethescope pull the end off and leave just the hollow tub to the earpieces. Now go all around the manifold and carb holding the tube as close to the manifold and carb as you can. You will find it if its there. Another way to look if you dont have a stethescope is to use carb cleaner. Get the engine to run, and spray the cleaner around all the gaskets (manifold and carb) if the idle changes there is your leak. Also spray around any vacuum ports and tubes on the manifold. Starting fluid will also work, but i dont recommend it because if you have a backfire or spark plug wire leaking, it will ignite a lot easier than carb clean and you will have a fire. WARNING If you have nicely painted surfaces carb cleaner may damage the finish, also do not spray a lot into the throat of the carb, it can hurt the engine.

I have had my nose in my own carb problems lately and thought to say.....check that the fuel line input does not have any Teflon tape balled up and blocking....the other Q is what kind of fuel pump are you running with? I have not gauged my aftermarket electric one (pretty certain 4-7 lbs is good for a Patsy) and sometimes think it could be stronger or there is a block at that junction. No expert here but, there also is a needle valve that you can unscrew and get a visual on....just to double check that it is pointed and nothing clogged there. Btw, a weak fuel flow can also be a problem back at the tank.....you said "long time sitting".

I have found that the Stromberg is very sensitive about vacuum. My Stromberg carbed Patrol doesn't run well if I even just have the air cleaner disconnected from the PCV hose on the valve cover. Like 2869ral said, I think your issue may be vacuum.

The scream that you describe at high RPMs is a sign of a vacuum leak. Even though you have replaced the gaskets something could be warped, or maybe a crack, or vacuum port somewhere that needs plugged.

I did try blocking the brake booster line from the manifold, that didnt help anything.
Also i am using the original patrol fuel pump (recently rebuilt)

Hi all,

So after much hair pulling and stressing i finally got the thing to run again. I ended up going all the way back to pulling the manifold off and noticed some damage on the gasket.
Turns out the manifold wasnt sitting properly (the outer openings have a small lip for aligning the thing) and this was burred over so the manifold wasnt seating onto the engine nicely.

Fixed this up and fired almost instantly!!! Yay!

Thanks for the update, good to know. From your description it sounded like a vacuum issue, which a crooked manifold will definitely cause.
