Rick G's 69 KL60

Post by rjiggy »

Here are a couple of pics of my 69. This is the one I did the all wheel disc brake conversion to and also has the Borg Warner Overdrive Unit. Some of the old pictures are still floating around in the archives. I'll get some more posted here, once I get it rolling out of the shop.

Just dropped the radiator and the heater core off this morning for a spa treatment (hot tank).
I bead blasted the air cleaner. I'll paint it this weekend.
Started the bead blasting on the room heater box yesterday.
I bought some caliper paint, so when I get to those, I'll take some more pictures of the mounting brackets I fabricated while they are disassembled.

I was in remission for some time now, but the sickness has returned, Patrol Fever that is.

Rick,
So may I add you to the list of people interested in a set of 1969 Patrol front turn signal lenses?
(A year ago, I spoke with a guy who will reproduce the lenses and sell them for about $60+shipping a pair. He needs a commitment for 15 pairs to justify the mold costs.)

Keith,

Count me in for a pair. I have one more lens and ring in the stash, but it and the left one in the pic are in OK condition, not great.

Thanks for that.

Well you've got a nice garage to give that Patrol some love in. :D

Did I miss the details on the Borg Warner overdrive? How is the performance on the highway with it?

Leslie,

Having owned and driven two patrols in my life, so far..., this one is much nicer to drive on the highway. I don't have a tach in the truck, but I would guess that the engine is turning around 2,000 rpm at 70mph. I did the math on it at one time and I recall that to be the case. It is actually nice to drive at 70. You don't feel like things are ready to come apart. I have not driven much above 70, really short wheelbase, 40+ years old truck and I'm not in that much of a hurry anymore.

I was fortunate, this setup came with the engine, trasmission, transfer case, od unit and the shortened drive shaft from a guy outside of Redding, CA. I had this rig for almost two years with no engine. I even bought a chevy 250 inline 6 with hopes of finding a way to adapt it to the patrol trans. When I went to see him about the engine he had listed, he offered me the complete setup. That turned out to be a huge bonus. I did take some pictures of the adapter plate when I had it apart. I thought they were posted on the npca site at one time. I don't know if I still have them. I will look around.

If I do put another patrol together, I would try to replicate this. It really makes the rig highway worthy.

Congratulations Rick on joining the forum.   I'm sure that we're going to benefit a lot from your experience.

I can't wait to see the pictures of the overdrive unit. I've been day dreaming on one since more than 20 years ago. The Patrol really needs one, and I'm with you: not to go faster, but to ease up the engine rpms when cruising on the highways. I have a tach meter on mine, and doing 70mph puts the engine at 3500 rpm or so. I'm constantly driving at 60 mph, so the OD will be a must for me.

I wonder if the old was a one-off deal, or if others could be available? I agree, 70 is about as fast as you want to go in a Patrol. It would be nice to be able to do it without straining the engine. Thanks for the detail on that.

Welcome to 60Patrol. Many of us would also be interested in the disc brake conversion.

Keith, Is your note above just rectangular lenses, or the round ones as well.
