SD33T Complete Diesel Engine - $2000

Post by EricB »

Hi all

I was talking to Ray at garageautohero.com (Seattle/Woodinville area) and he told me he has a complete SD33T diesel he is looking to sell for $2000
I wouldn't know where to start on converting to diesel, and I already have too much on my plate as it is - so I am passing along the info to other Patrol'ers...

He says the tranny bellhousing remains unchanged from the newer Patrol it came out of
He says it used the same large 10spline input shaft that our P40 tranny uses - so this engine should bolt right up to our drivetrain...
The engine mounts on the engine are a horizontal flat set up so some custom fab will have to happen to connect it to our rails.

The Nikki injection pump has a built in lift pump so you "just" have to run a fuel line to it.
The fuel filter / water separator is on the engine, and you should also add a return line to the tank from the filter housing.

He says all the auxiliary components are included.

fourdoor510@yahoo.com is how you can get a hold of him.
Tell him Eric sent you.

fun tidbit: i didn't know that International Scout's used this engine too ... that engine got around !

Not quite the same- the early Scout version was not turbocharged, and could not even beat a school bus on the holeshot

Would be a fun project for someone so inclined...

But on the topic- The SD33T makes less peak torque than the P engine (175lbft@2200, versus 235lbft@ 2000), it burns fuel that is 40% more expensive (and barely gets 40% better fuel economy, so that's a wash), and is not exactly repairable by the home mechanic-type...

Heck, even the longevity factor seems like a trivial consideration- a properly rebuilt and maintained P engine should easily do a couple hundred thousand miles (or more, right Esteban? ;) )

So, what's the attraction about running this engine in a 60 Patrol? Is there some feature or capability to this engine that I am missing which would justify the extra cost?

I'm a big fan of diesel engines, but I must confess that in this particular application, I just don't get it... :confusion-questionmarks:

I had to call some attention to this statement (not hammering you personally here, Eric, I'm pretty sure you are just passing along what you heard)...

But the P40/SD33T Patrol bellhousings are not interchangeable with the P engine's bellhousing; and more importantly: the 60 Patrol's transmission won't just bolt up to either the P40 or SD33T's bellhousing from the MQ Patrol.

So swapping in a SD33T would require more than just some fabrication on the rear mounts. RMP&O is doing an SD33 swap into a 60 model Patrol on Expedition Portal forum- there is a ton of info in that thread about issues he has encountered along the way

you are correct, sir. That fact probably made them at least 20% faster than the non-turbo early Scouts, which means the 1980-newer Scouts could be classified only as "slow", as opposed to "irritatingly slow..." :D
