Lets talk about Cross members...

We all know too well that a 60 series Patrol cross member usually comes 2 ways. Near perfect or completely and utterly buggered! After a lot of search this morning I have uncovered a number of posts that discuss the need to replace or repair but we don't actually have a thread (that I could uncover) dedicated to the repair and replacement of these holier-than-thou yet very important pieces.
I'll kick things off. Below are pictures of HP's cross member. I'd love to hear peoples thoughts and ideas on how to go about this fix. Even better post up your solutions if you have already completed it.
As I see it there are a few options (lets assume the body is on the frame and engine is in):
1. Cut the whole member off and replace with custom. This presents the problem to properly tie in the rear engine mounts to the new member while the engine is still in the car and the body is on.
2. Cut the bottom section off leaving only the top "plate". My '77 shorty had this done. The owner then made a new cross member from 25x50mm box and welded it to the original top plate.
4. Create a "brace" from angle. This could wrap around the existing cross member adding support.
