The previous owner of the '77 ute I'm collecting on the weekend tells me that the motor runs but the truck doesn't drive. He thinks the clutch is ceased. Where do I start?

I'd start by verifying that the clutch is gone first. If it is, you'll need to pull the motor and trans to replace the clutch.

I've had good luck freeing-up stuck clutches on several (non Patrol) vehicles.
These were cases where the only problem was the friction disc being rusted/stuck to the flywheel or pressure plate due to prolonged non-use.
In this scenario, the feel/action of the clutch pedal will feel normal. If not, you've some other problem.
Sometimes the disc can be bumped loose by (engine off) holding brakes securely or otherwise assuring the truck can't move, put trans in high gear, hold clutch pedal to the floor, bump the starter motor.
Next method involves bumping the vehicle or yanking with a chain. (Not a stretchy strap) Engine off, low gear this time, clutch pedal again held down.
If the design of the clutch allows access to the edge of the friction disc, it's possible to drive a small screwdriver blade
or chisel under the disc while an assistant is holding the pedal down.
Anybody else have other procedures? Warnings?
