New Member near San Francisco

Hello All,
I just purchased a frame-off restoration of a 1969 Soft Top via eBay:

and have been lurking here for a few days as I arranged shipping. The previous owner did some really nice work and even fixed a few things for me before putting it on a trailer.

She finally showed up a couple days ago and I have been annoying the neighbors with the sound and smell as I shake it down and learn how to drive it. The carb needs some work and the washer fluid bottle was dangling by a hose last night, but (knock on wood) so far I am really pleased.
I owned a couple old vehicles (68 Bronco, 65 Porsche 912) many years ago, and hope I enjoy the Patrol even more than those.
I am really impressed by the expertise on this board and the willingness to help. I will post some photos as soon as I figure the board mechanics, and look forward to benefiting from the knowledge of fellow members.

You came to the right place for information, parts-trading, and general 60-Patrol related insanity. I added your Patrol's VIN number (from the Ebay ad) to the USA Patrol registry - Do you have the numbers from the engine, frame, and the VIN tag on the firewall (I see the tag in one of the pics)? If you have them, I will add them to the Registry.

What are some of your plans for it?

Thanks for the welcome. The 'Muffler' does not muffle much and the exit of the tail pipe serves to warm the thighs of any passenger brave enough to enter.
Engine # is P-64485.
Photo of VIN tag is too large to attach. Any advice to a noob on shrinking to meet 1024 limit?

Thanks Faux. Just checked out you galleries and it appears you have a serious PatrolProblem.

We are back and forth to Tahoe occasionally, and I think of Roseville mostly as a traffic bottleneck - now I can think of it as a Patrol oasis. I may be seeking your guidance on ignition and carbs - it looks like you have considerable experience. Nice to see your kid(s) involved. I hope to teach mine how to drive a stick and change the oil and a tire or two.

No real plans yet, except to get it running smoothly - first the carb, then maybe ignition. The smell and the noise need addressing. Although not a restoration purist, I plan to try to bring it back to as close to original as is practical. And along the way try to resurrect the part of me that enjoyed tinkering, after too many years of computer-controlled-driving-appliance-induced deterioration. Was once a MechEng.
Maybe teach the kids (8&10) a few things about cars and enjoy the CA sunshine. Probably a few back- road jaunts and a trail or two, but only after gaining some confidence in its reliability.

Any suggestions? You seem to be an authority.

Sure -- Why, yes I do have some Patrol "issues"

We have a few rules around here -- For a kid to get their driver's license, they must 1) take the test in a stick and 2) understand car repair basics. The patrol nails both of those. So we made the kids help with the rebuild and have even let them drive it out at the puddle formerly known as Folsom Lake (and yes, I am a safety guy! A safety guy willing to let an 8 year old take command of a 3,500 pound vehicle... well, assisted command )

-- Also, we'd love to have you stop by for coffee on your way up the hill. Always happy to meet fellow Patrollers. There are several of us that I know 'round these parts (Vallejo, Dunnigan, El Dorado Hills, Penryn and, of course, Roseville... Did I miss anyone?). We should have a Patrol meetup! I don't think the any of the NorCal patrol gang even has a remotely legitimate excuse for not meeting up!

Sounds like a good plan. You probably have a few smooth, level dirt roads that you can take it out on, once you're willing to get it dirty. You will quickly be impressed with how well it handles situations that you might think could be difficult. Once you get it tuned, you'll enjoy driving it on the road as well. It's not a real good freeway vehicle, but you have a lot of back roads that are 55 - 65 MPH that it will do nicely on. If you're not in a hurry, take it to Tahoe.

I think it's too nice to do any aggressive off-road with.
