Bench testing a 69 wiper motor

I've got a 69 windshield wiper motor in a box of stuff. How do I go about bench testing it. It's got 4 wires in the connector I'm assuming one is positive , one is negative and the remains two are speed taps?

Please take a look at the picture, with the wiring diagram just for the wiper motor. Everything else is deleted for clarity.

Positive from the wiper motor, Blue is always connected to the fuse box. Depending on where the ground connection is applied, the two speeds are activated:

Blue/White to ground: Slow Speed

Blue/Red to ground: Fast Speed

Blue/White and Yellow together, wiper motor turns to the resting position, and stops moving when it gets there.

I have this wiper motor in mine, since it came out of the 74 that I wrecked. Some light grease inside the gears is all that they take to keep working for a long time. Also, the big gear has some contact tracks embeded: coat them with dielectric grease that you find at the auto parts store. The grease allows electrical contact and also acts as lubricant.

So where would I apply the 12 volts to the connector in order to test it. I'm assuming I would need to connect positive to the ground wire on the case and my negative to one of the 4 spades in the connector?

The diagram applies to the single wiper motor with two speeds that was fitted from Dec '68 and up. I think yours is a 65, so you have individual wiper motors. Did you install the other?

I just want to test out a single motor out of a 69 to see whether it works or not as I don't wanna post parts on here that do not work

Is your set-up a 1 wiper motor set-up, or two? I thought all '69s had the one wiper motor set-up, with the linkage in the windshield frame. If you have the 2 motor set-up, I think that is pre-1969 and the wiring is much different. If so, is you question how to test these individual wiper arm motors out on your '69? Sorry, I was just a bit confused.

I have a '73 that I am going to convert to the individual 2 wiper motor set-up,,, eventually. I think I'm relegated to using after market motors, but if i can find original motors, I will go that route and have them rebuilt.

Looking at the motor part of the connector, you have 4 blades connected to the wires that go inside that will correspond to the following colors in the diagram

(L) Blue --------------- (Y) Yellow
(LR) Blue/Red -------- (LW) Blue/White

The colors of the cables that go inside the motor I don't think match exactly the above, except for the blue. The above will resemble the connector if you're looking at the blades. Place the Blue on the upper left corner to have a reference with colors in the diagram

Connect the body of the motor to the negative
Connect the (L) Blue to the positive

With another cable connected to the negative touch the blade that corresponds to the (LR) Blue/Red ---> you should have the fast speed

If you now touch the (LW) Blue/White ---> you should have the slow speed.

Without using the above cable, if you touch the (Y) Yellow with the (LW) Blue/White, the motor should come to the resting position.

Hope this doesn't look by written by a bureaucrat :lol:

Perfect. That's what I thought . I tested it out and the motor works great on both speeds
